Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Any High School players wearing masks this year?

Wow... sure is a different tune than 3-4 years ago when our program mandated it for 1st, 3rd and pitcher at 10U, 12u and 14u. I sure did take the heat for that decision. We use to sell Gamefaces, Defender Shields and now the Rip-Its. Ironically, 80% of our sales come from non Wizards.
I lost count on the number of stories that I have heard that saved an injury.
Unfortunately, every year I have a sale after the fact.
Check our website for Rip-its at $35.00 each. https://www.fastsoftball.org/store/store.asp

Catching on as our varsity 1st baseman and current varsity pitcher both wear something on their face. On the JV, and Freshman teams almost everyone in the infields are wearing them...

I solved that real fast, strolled by head coaches dad who was an assistant. I politely said," you are about to lose a second basemen". He looked at me and asked me what I was talking about. I said," no mask no play." He responded with I cant raise them. I responded with," Yep, but I sure can pull her off the field."
Wow...if I said that to one of my DD's HS coaches, they would be wearing their mask while riding the pine for the rest of the season!

My daughter will wear her mask because I paid for the braces in her mouth, and she play first base usually creeping into around 30 feet when the bat gets swung.

If we had coaches heckling my daughter because she wears a mask for safety reasons...she wouldn't be on the bench, she would be practicing for the select ball season during March and April. Period.

It only takes a split second and you don't want to wish she had the mask on. I see them in HS ball, including my dd (note the avatar). The coaches making fun of the protection shouldn't be allowed in the dugout.

In SC all of the teams (1B, P, 3B) we played out of state wore them. SS and 2B most had mouth pieces in also.

My daughter wears hers to pitch (starting varsity). I have seen a couple other pitchers around our league wear them. But some of the travel pitchers didn't for HS, but do for travel. With my dd, it is an automatic.

saw disaster barely avoided last week in a jr high game, big hitter up , big mature 13u kid throwing, hitters blisters a ball that touched hair but got no face or head, The result was the pitcher and coaches went right one like nothing happened ---3 inches from the forehead , 6 inches to the nose . all that saved her from an ambulance ride and possible multiple surgeries. My kid is a senior this year and she is wearing her Rip It to pitch in. She's only doing it willingly since the coach decided they all have to wear these bulky visors, no exceptions unless you are wearing a mask. Backup pitcher wears one on the mound too now and regardless of the reason why, they are protected.

My wife and I have come to realize that our 10U (5th grader) NEVER wears her mask. She catches all the time for Travel so it we never noticed. But she plays in the grade school CYO team and plays SS and 3rd (no stealing). So we had to sit her down and expalin the ways of the world. She is still against it. Hard to believe a 10 year old can already have that macho business going on. She does not like it.....even after we explained the possible dangers she actually chuckle....like she was too good for that to happen to........which of course means she is about to get a bad bounce and get her teeth knock in.

Meanwhile my 12U 3rd basemen and my 9U OF do not put on their glove until the mask is in place.............hard to believe they all grow up in the same house.

I have been to a few games lately and the opposing teams for the most part have not been wearing them. I agree, I start to cringe when certain batters come up to hit and the third baseman is still picking daisies without a mask. I was at a tournament a couple of years ago and 2 girls got line shots at their faces, girl with the mask got to stay and play, other one was transported to the ER.

Told all my Middle school girls before the season started if they want to play in the infield, then they better have a mask.

Our team has two players that spent time in the Hospital due to facial injuries. The varsity has 3 players with masks (out of 12, two pitchers) the JV team has 8 masks in their bags with 4 players typically wearing them. The opposing teams seem to about the same. It is very common now to see masks on even top flight pitchers. When the pitchers wear them the other players seem more comfortable with putting them on.

No she is not wearing it. Not sure why other than none of the other girls are. I don't even know why I didn't stop the game and make her when I first saw but I guess I didn't want to cause any problems in HS as she is a freshman. (history there , but not getting into) After I read all of the post in this thread I couldn't believe I didn't make her - that is so not like me. I just texted her and told her to wear it tonight - no exceptions. I won't be able to know for sure if she does or not as I'll be umpiring another game across town, but I'll be at her game on Thursday and guess what , she will be wearing it. SOO right it only takes once to wish she did and then it could be too late.

It seems that on my daughter's team, the P and infielders wear them unless they come from the rec ball ranks, then they don't. Almost all of the travel kids wear them.

I think it will become part of the gear as they get older.

Kind of like goalies in hockey wearing masks...........funny that at one point they did not. Same with football, ********............it is funny that this is taking so long once you think about it.

I feel the same way in tournaments when I see 3rd base without one. I have told 3rd multiple times that my player was not going to bunt, and she can hit very hard so please back up. I cringe and hope my batter hits it to center instead of pulling it.
