Is ASA requiring all coaches/teams to have background checks and certifications just to play in their tournaments this year?

I dont see background checks as a bad thing. I work in the law enforcment field and getting a back ground check on a coach or helper really isnt that hard. Most local PD's do them free. There are also online services that cost very little. Besides do you want your DD to be trusted with a person/coach/helper who has been convicted offenses agains kids or women?? I think not. But on the same note a back ground check will only show you those that have a record...not those that have not been caught.

Agreed! I have had more (and extensive) background checks due to the sensitive nature of my past military service then most. I still work in an environment which I need a back ground check and still will need to pay ASA for another one. I think it should be up to the Org. to run these and not ASA. JMHO

Anyone know why you cannot print out your background check through the ASA site that has been completed? It states "cleared" but there is no link to see what is there. It would be nice to have a copy of this in my personal file that I take along to tournaments.

I got this same email. Last year getting ACE certified was a total fiasco and the problem was on ASA's end. After a hundred emails and phone calls to get Level 2 certified I finally got my card in the mail and it was Level 1. When I informed them I got the wrong card I was told too bad that was the best they could do this year. As it turned out (probably because we didn't go to ASA's nationals) I was never asked to present it at any tournaments.

Will TDs and or umpires be checking for them this year?

I also seriously question the value of an eight dollar background check that provides near instant results. We pay $90 to do background checks for our employees and it takes a day or so to get the results.

Smells like a money grab to me.

You might want to get a 2nd ACE in case the 1st gets tossed from a game. It would be a shame to have to forfeit because of it...

That's a wonderful and useful point SoCalDad . A forfeit would be the situation in that case.

How does a forfeit come into play here? Who checks whether you have the certification? The TD? I don't think the umpire is going to keep track of who has that certification and who doesn't.

I would say the TD at check-in will ask .. or should ask.

I can't help but wonder.. IF a coach gets thrown out.. will the other team's coach ask the umpire to check to see if another coach , who is taking over for the coach that was tossed, is ACE certified.

Everybody probally will comment "how they can't see a coach doing that" and then it happens because the game is a crucial game... maybe for an ASA/USA berth or something... and it happens.

Now, tell me, who's to blame here? The team that didn't certify two.. or the other coach who asked it to be verified?

Stranger things have happen.

But, as an umpire, I would hope they don't get involved in that part of it... on their own.

Don't make us pay if not enforcing. I like the background checks...just do what you (ASA) said you were going to do.

What ever happened to good ole' softball and orgs taking care of their own business?

It's about $$$$$$$ people.

I was seeing what GSA ( Global Sports Authority ) was putting prices out for insurance coverage the other day and WOW... talk about a HUGE saving for teams 14u and under... with the same coverage amounts as the other guys...

I like GSA because not only is it very simple and classifies teams based on their level of play... it does it BEST to make it fun for all involved and doesn't get involved and try to CONTROL the situation of orgs and leaves it up to them to make their own background checks, etc... like it should be.

Stop all the dumb stuff A$A.. for the sake of money....

GSA is growing leaps and bounds people. There has been so many ASA and NSA and USSSA tournament directors and regional people jumping ship this past Fall and winter.. that it's get exciting now.

GSA will be a public-traded organization in two years on the NYSE and I have earned the right to be one of eight executive committee members/owners.

Come on Quaker, GSA being a publicly traded company means one thing they have to answer to stock holders. Stocker holders want money. GSA will be no better than ASA, NSA, USSSA, and whatever other stupid sanction wants to jump into it. How many sanctions do we need?
