How many conferences do you get with Your pitcher/defense in a 7 inning game before you have to pull your pitcher? If you've used 0 conferences how many do you get in an inning before your required to change your pitcher?

ASA Rule 5 THE GAME, Section 7 Conferences, B. Defensive Conferences.

To paraphrase

you get three freebies. On the fourth (in a seven inning game) you need to pull the pitcher.

You can use all three in one inning without making a change as long as it's regulation play.
By regulation I mean first 7 innings.

You get one more free conference per inning in extra innings, but on your second conference in an inning (in extra innings) pitcher has to go even if you didn't burn all three in regulation play.

How did I do Bret?

Correct, so does that mean you can go talk to the same pitcher 3 times in 1 inning before having to pull her? (assuming you have not used a conference yet?)

Hmmmm. I do believe that if you make the second visit in the same inning you have to pull her. I don't have a rule book on me to check myself though. Interested to hear Bretman's response.

Unless something has changed in last couple of years, you can go more than once in an inning up until you get to that fourth time in the game, other than the extra innings situation.

So unlike baseball, you can conference technically with the same pitcher 3 times in the same inning during a normal 7 inning game?

Yep. In ASA (and high school softball) you get three conferences per seven innings and you can take those three anytime you want to.

This is different than some baseball rule sets, but not all of them. High school baseball rules this the same as ASA does, NCAA and MLB does not. And it is different for some other softball rule sets. For instance, NCAA softball allows only one defensive charged conference per inning.

Thanks Bretman, I just ran acrossed this and to be honest I may have been guilty of "suggesting" the other team needed to change their pitcher, and the coach of the other team and umped seemed to agree with me and changed their pitcher. If you do have to pull your pitcher because its your 4th conference, can the pitcher just re-enter later in the game as a pitcher? Is there a time frame in which they must be out of the game?

Once removed under the charged conference rule, the pitcher may not return to pitch. If she does come back in to pitch- and actually throws a pitch- she is disqualified from the game (not ejected, and all that entails with regards to playing short-handed, etc., but she may not participate further in that game).

NSA Conference Rule:

Pg 118, Rule 6, Section 15

There shall be only one charged conference between the manager and other team representative from the dugout with each and every pitcher in an inning. The second charged conference shall result in the removal of the pitcher from the pitching position for the remainder of the game. If the pitcher is removed from the pitching position as the result of a second charged conference, the pitcher can remain in the game in any other position excluding the pitching position for the remainder of the game.
EXCEPTION: It is not a charged conference when the manager or team representative enters the field of play and removes the pitcher from the pitching position. The player may return to the pitching position.
NOTE: A starting or substitute pitcher must pitch to a batter until the batter reaches a base or is put out.
*NOTE: The rules for a charged conference do not change in extra innings

Why do I suddenly get the feeling that we'll now be seeing more "conferences" late in close tournament games where there's a clock ticking?

Yeah, but then where are the rules about clocks at all? Don't get me started on that one. But three conferences is way too many in a timed and/or shortened game.
