2011 ASA Rule Question

Curious, as I have heard several different conversations in regards to college girls playing 18/u next summer.

I believe I heard no college players can currently play ASA B & Gold, and have heard it will also be in effect for ASA A next summer. Also heard that the rule will only apply to college pitchers.

What if player doesn't play college ball? What if she plays college ball and gets red shirted her freshman year?

I am just curious after hearing multiple discussions on this throughout the season if anyone knows the facts?

Last year, ASA made some changes regarding eligibility of college players for this season (2010).

Honestly, since this was a change to the ASA code and not the playing rules I didn't give it much notice. Umpires generally don't need to worry about eligibility and roster issues! We leave those up to coaches, tournament directors and administrative officials.

I'm sure I can find the definite answer, but it will take some digging. In the meantime, I would suggest contacting your local ASA commissioner.

The rule changes for 2011 won't be voted on and announced until November.

Here is the change to ASA Code for 2010:

Article 501 C 05 a 07 New and Re-number
07. Once a player participates in an intercollegiate softball program for a university, college, or junior/community college, she is ineligible to play in the Junior Olympic Class "B" and "Gold" classifications.
Comments: Eliminates college players from the JO Class B and Gold classifications.

FYI, many on the ASA Executive Committee felt that they didn't go far enough, in November ASA will go across the board and prohibit college players from 18u A-B-Gold.

Not sure if they will go as far as PGF did, their language specifically mentions that NO COLLEGE STUDENTS are allowed to play in their 18u division.

Right now Gold would allow a "club team" player, but B specifically prohibits Club Team players.

For my part, we have 3 players that will be playing as Freshman this fall, even though they would all like to return, and I would like for them to return, we are not plannig on them being available to play with us next summer, not sure what the other orgs are doing, but in reality, our summer season is preparation for the 18A in Bllomington-Normal, and we would rather develop the players that will play there.

In any case ASA will eliminate college players from all 18u in November, I would bet a bundle on it.

good grief! doesn't everyone just want to play ball! just put the players on the field who cares where they go to school and even if they are 22! just play

18u already has a reduced number of teams

I don't want to play the ohio ice (altho I love Coach Chuck) 100 times next summer

by 18u I think the girls just want to play and they don't care either

Sounds like a plan to boost the 23u division. Might be a great opportunity for a TD that can market a tournament of this type.

I agree with The3dm "Sounds like a plan to boost the 23u division", which it will!
Like Tig stated, "Let them play", 18u division is small enough.
Its good for 18u players that have not yet had a season of college ball yet get to face players and teams that have.
Any idea as to how other sanctioning bodies are going to handle collegiate players at 18u next season being that ASA is looking to make some additional changes?

Anyone know if USSSA or NSA will allow college players to play 18U this year?

I heard they too were NOT going to allow them to play, but cannot find it anywhere.

I know they won't vote for a few months but you know how things leak out.

For USSSA, I haven't heard. In 2007-8-9 they had a 18U Major Category that College players had to play in but in 2010 they also allowed college players to play A or B and let the team classification reflect the strength of the team as opposed to worrying about if any players played in college or not. If a college player who was a starting pitcher for a D-1 school, then you would expect the team to be a "A" team and if the player was a starter for a DIII school who went 0-XX for the season, then that team might be a "B" team. To me, this was a logical approach. If the 18U college player had an impact on their college team then I would bet that they would want to take the summer off from a very competitive college, long spring schedule and not get involoved in all the showcases/travel.

One thing is, They shouldn't be playing in showcase tournaments, as that reduces the amount of kids eligible to play in exactly that>>> "A SHOWCASE TOURNAMENT" They were already showcased and are playing in College... Regular ones, no big deal to me...

Heard that teams with College players could only play USSSA "A" or USSSA "Elite".

Also heard no College players of any kind will be allowed to play at 18U.

Trouble is....there are not many, if any, USSSA "A" or "Elite" tournaments in Ohio. Which will it be ?

Here is my question:
Daughter will graduate from High School in May 2011.
She probably won't start college until the Fall of 2011.
So does that mean that she won't be able to play Summer ball with her travel 18U team in June 2011?

I am so confused on this matter.

Thanks!

Thanks so much. I didn't think there would be a problem for her to play because she wouldn't be playing for her college team until Spring of 2012.

Thanks again.

Rob--USSSA Elite is a term I have never seen nor heard mentioned. Of course, that could be brewing in Hqs USSSA and I guess we will find out after the November meeting. There will be several 18U events in Beavercreek in 2011.

FYI....If she is starting in college in Fall 2011, she will be playing a few games starting in Fall 2011 not spring 2012...
