Ice ed nailed it. What we need to get past is the confrontational attitude displayed by both coaches and umpires. Everyone is going to make mistakes - that's a given. Umpires that have a chip on their shoulder give umpires in general a bad name. Coaches that don't respect umpires give coaches a bad name. It's never going to be hunky-dory - just respect the game and those involved. jmho

Well said I could not agree with you more. I instruct all umpires that work for me at the pre-game metting to instruct coaches that if they have an issue with a rule question, ask for time and approach the umpire with your quesstion. If they come ranting and raving out of the dugout they have less of ever even asking the question.

We, as coaches, always ask our girls to forget about the last play. If they make an error, move forward, but learn from our mistakes. Maybe some of us should practice what we preach. JMO

When Umpiring I have my pregame meeting with my partner I offer the following information....

First we go over how we will cover the field and plays. Second I say " Lets get the calls right, we need to put the ego's aside and get the calls right." It is for the girls. These families spend thousands of dollars per year to play this game. We owe it to them to get it right."

I love the idea of hearing things from an umpire?s perspective. I've been thinking about bringing an umpire in to a preseason meeting and have him (her) go over some of the controversial calls and myths. Also, tell the parents to get their questions ready and have a Q&A session. This could get quite entertaining.

We had a local umpire come to our practice at the beginning of the season and talk with our girls. It was a great experience for the girls because they got to ask questions and find out about what the umpires are looking for. They also got clarification on some of the rules they weren't understanding. It was also very educational for us coaches, not only from the umpire, but from the questions the girls asked the umpire, we were able to zoom in on some of the rules the girls didn't understand. Turned out great for all of us.
