Baserunning footwork-crossover or jab step?

Curious what the consensus is out there. What method do you teach your kids to use to get from their lead-off position to running once the ball is put into play? In baseball of course this would be the first step to stealing, but softball has a totally different steal technique since the girls are already facing second base & can leave on release of the pitch.

Once your runners have their lead-off, what footwork do you recommend to get them running towards 2B?
