Does the Rip It fit most brands of softball helmets easily? Is there a certain brand that works with the Rip It better? TIA

I thought the facemask had to match (same make) as the helmet. For example, a Worth facemask on a Worth helmet. Does Rip it make a helmet? I don't think they do. I would be careful mixing facemasks with other brands of helmets. There is also one called an emask (clear or colored plastic) that does not have a helmet to match. That facemask seems to not line up correctly on some helmets so holes have to be drilled. Like I said, I would be careful mixing or buying a facemask that does not have a helmet to match.

I believe if umps want to get picky the manufactor must be the same on mask and helmet. We have always used Schutt. Got new ones for the team this year and they have changed their facemask from a few years ago. Almost like a QB's football helmet with the top bar sitting on top of the bill of the helmet. The vision is much better then the old mask.

honestly they are all the same after you get comfortable with one you never notice it at all. i have used two different mask and after a few at bats in each of them i didnt notice it at all.

Never had a problem with the Rip-it on any helmet.
They sell the mask alreadey mounted on a wilson helmet.
DDs love the open view, also see several other manufacts. also changing their design for better visibility.
My biggest pet peeve is the girls looking through the wrong part of the masks.

Daughter's travel team issues out the helmets so everything matches and I believe they are schutt but there are two rows of bars just below the visor and she feels they block her vision every time the helmet shifts slightly and I've heard others on her team with the same opinion. I think a mask with only one bar just below or above the visor is a better design for seeing.

We had a situation at an ASA sanctioned tournament a few years ago where the umpires were instructed to ban any player if three conditions concerning the helmets were not met. 1. The helmet had to have a current valid embossed stamp (NOT a sticker), 2. The facemask had to have a current embossed stamp (NOT a sticker), and 3. The helmet and facemask had to be from the same manufacturer.

We had team supplied identical "one size fits all" Schutt helmets with Schutt facemasks. All the helmets even had "template holes" that exactly matched the masks. The only difference was that 3 or 4 were new, the rest were only 1 year old. It was obvious that all were identical - EXCEPT that the older ones had a painted stamp and the newer ones were embossed.

Even a weekend call to a Schutt representative would not satisfy the TD. We wound up having a group of parents make an emergency run to a local sporting goods store to buy 8 or 9 face masks that were embossed.

Safety was not the issue here - no one will ever convince me that this was not some type of racket. But lesson learned. BE SURE of all the minor details and requirements of all the tournaments you are planning on attending. Some will stop at nothing to bolster profits! When they start checking your brand of underwear at the gate, you know you're in trouble!

P.S. As far as vision being blocked, be sure she is getting a good two-eyed look at the pitcher's release point. Video from the pitcher's view will confirm this. Be sure her head is not tilted. Even with good mechanics, some kids are just more sensitive to having something in their immediate field of vision. They have to work harder at focusing on the release point, and ignore everything else.

hockeybuckeye. Sounds like you have the old Schutt facemask. They have a new one for 2008 that is much better.

We have had the Rip-It for 3 years now and we have used it on a number of different helmet makes. Some fit easier then others but in the end it has fit all models that we have used it on.

As for the umpires we have never had an issue. Both the helmets and the masks have to be seperately approved. I have not heard that the apporoval is void if they are mixed.

Thanks Lionsfastpitch! I was wondering about that as I'm not familiar with Schutt helmets. If the head of our organization O.K's it I would pay out of pocket for the upgrade. I would not take initiative on messing with equipment that does not belong to me.

Have had Spder-Mask for 2 years now. It gives you more visibility than Rip-It and is lighter. Has all the credentials the umps are looking for written on the side.

I went back thru my notes. When we went to the Crystl Bustos camp with Howard Carrier. They pointed out that the Schutt helment gave better vision. They did a demo on how you could see the ball better, due to way the helment is made. The confusion started last year, since the wording for ASA and NFHS is different.and it was the first year for High School. ASA says stamp, NFHS says label.

Bringing this back up to the top. I decided on the new Schutt mask on a Schutt Air 3 Ponytail. DD loves it & says the visibility is much improved over the old Schutt mask. She's very happy with it.
