Just curious what hotel everyone recommends or has stayed at in Columbus and which are the closest to the fields. Also for those of you who have booked rooms what group rate are you getting? We were overcharged in our hotel in NC last year by almost $20/night. Didn't know at the time until we overheard another team checking out. Thanks for your help!

Wow. ?There are so many hotels in Columbus it's hard to say. ?The closest would be the set of hotels off Stringtown Road in Grove City, which is maybe 4-5 miles away. ?I think there is a Holiday Inn Express, Hampton and a couple of others. ?

For a different experience, you could stay downtown at the Courtyard. the Drury Inn or there is a nice Red Roof Inn, all close to the Arena District and Nationwide Arena. ?There are restuarants across the street and a food court in the Convention Center which is also right there. Personally, I think it would be more fun to stay downtown, which is only a few minutes from Berliner Park, than to stay off another non-descript exit off of I-71. ?

Another place to stay might be Crosswoods complex at Rt. 23 and I-270 in Worthington. ?There are probably nine hotels there (Courtyard, Holiday Inn, Microtel, Red Roof, Sheraton and some others) and a ton of restuarants, huge movie theater and other shops all within walking distance from any of the hotels. ?Polaris Fashion Mall is only a few minute drive from there. ?Crosswoods is about 15-20 minutes from Berliner. If a team is lucky and looking for a practice field during the daytime, I might be persuaded to let them use Thomas Worthington H.S., which is only five minutes away and on the way toward Berliner. ?

Well, those are the three areas I would stay. ?There are many other options, but no way to know the prices for each without calling. ?

For all you folks coming to Columbus,Berwanger Park is located off the 1st Ext south of Downtown Columbus on I-71.
The Hotels at Easton are a great place to turn a softball week/weekend into a real nice stay. Easton is located off I-270 East(Outerbelt) prob only 5 miles/15 mins from park. 270 to 670 West / I-71 South, you 're there.lol
Many "Chain" hotels up & down I-71,all the way up to Polaris(north of town) which is approx 20-25 mins.
Either Easton or Polaris will keep "The Little Woman" happy during a hot week in Cowtown.
Hell,Joea lives down there he can tell you about Downtown,Short North,Campus Area, & ?other places to see!!

LOL,read above Joea beat me to the punch!!

Bold is right, Easton would also be a great place to stay. I'm trying to think of the hotels there. There is a Hampton Inn, but I'm guessing that might be more expensive than your typical Hampton Inn. The Hilton is very nice and probably out of everyone's price range. I think those are the only two that sit right at Easton where you can walk to the shopping. Once you get outside of the immediate Easton area, that area is not worth a darned. But the Hampton Inn at Easton would be a very popular hotel for the girls.

Easton is about 8-10 miles from Berliner (not Berwanger, Bold, lol!) and about 10-13 minutes. It's all freeway, so it's an easy drive.

There are a cluster of hotels in the Tuttle Crossing and Cemetery Road intersections with I-270 that would be between 15-30 minutes drive time to the fields. Several of the hotels are reasonably priced, such as Hampton Inn and Amerisuites. There is also a Staybridge Suites off Tuttle that has several suite rooms, with two separate bed/bath rooms, with a common living area. Perfect for two families, and you can probably get it for less than $100 per family.

Having made our reservations early, I can tell you that most of the hotel rooms at Stringtown are already booked. The hotels know it to and are charging more. If you look towards the Easton area or west of 315 I think you would still be within good driving distance.
I did however cancel 4 rooms yesterday at the Micro-tel at Stringtown Rd. They may be available, they want a weeks stay locked in though.
Hope it helps, B's Dad

There are places all along the outbelt where a team can stay. One of the deciding factors is what you and your team would like to do during the down time. ?That could make a difference.

For example,
Downtown has COSI, museums, theaters, Area district (for the parents/adults the Brewery district). The Ohio State University and Ohio museum of natural history. AND the Columbus Clippers - if they are in town.

On the eastern side of Columubus is Easton has shopping, theaters, restaurants

On the North side is Polaris (which has the same attractions as Easton). ?The Germain ampitheater is there and it is concert season.

NW of Columbus has the Columbus Zoo and a hugh ourdoor waterpark (Wyandot Lake).

South (near Grove City) there are two horse race tracks. ?I am not sure what is in season during that time. ?I don't know that I want the girl betting on horses, but the parents might want to place a bet or two.

Do a google for Columbus attractions and get an idea of what might interest your team. That might help to decide where to stay.

Hey J.C., we'll be staying at the L. Binkley Inn west of Grove City! Has that down home atmosphere and good old fashioned cooking...lol. Only problem is there's no pool for the kids, but I hear they have a nice spinkler system though. ;D

You left out the price. (I will pass on the sprinkler. I would probably drown standing up)

Is it true that if you do not book your hotel reservation thru the NSA website, you may be charged more for your team registration? Has anyone heard anything like that?

What do you mean you don't want your girls betting on the horses? ?Nothing like a night out at the track, as long as the girls don't go Art Schlichter on you. ?

Actually, a bunch of my team was all set to hit Turfway Park one night last year at Sluggerfest, but the track was dark that night. ?I believe that betting on the ponies, or playing cr@ps, or other similar things is a good thing for the girls. ?Of course, their parents would have to approve, but it teaches some important lessons.

First, it teaches odds and probabilities. ?Not only is that good for everyday life, it's extremely useful for the softball field. ?A solid understanding of odds allows a player to understand game situations. ?A great understanding of odds combined with experience and concentration on the ballfield allows a player to have a much deeper understanding of game strategy and to apply it without having to even think about it. ?If a player is concentrating on the game and fully understands odds and probabilities, she'll just know what the percentage play is to make in all situations and will be able to adapt on the fly, even in the middle of a botched play. ?

So as you can see, I'm all in favor of hitting the track! ?You just have to get past the uptight parents who are convinced their kid will become Art Schlichter if they make a $2 bet on a 1-5 favorite to Show. ?

Joe-
Some of my fondest memories as a child are of going to the harness races at the county fair with my dad. Of course I never placed any bets, but I did tell him which horses to place his bets on.

The Holiday Inn at I70 and Hamilton Rd. on the east side of Columbus is 9 miles from Berliner and has the brand new Fort Rapids indoor waterpark which looks really cool. Their number is 1-877-33SPLASH. You can find them on the web also at www.fortrapids.com

For those from outside the Columbus area and not familiar with the rush hour traffic situations, trying to come through downtown Columbus in the morning or evenings rush hours requires lots of extra time. ?From whatever hotel you choose, I would add at least 30 minutes drive time to what mapquest or whatever mapping/direction program you use. ?Do not let the Saturday or Sunday traffic flows influence your decision making process. ?The weekdays are definitely far worse.

It is not impossible, but it does require a lot of patience.

During non rush hour times, about 15 minutes once you get on SR315 in Worthington. Rush hour, double or triple it.

Yoxford, same here, although once I was about 15 or 16 I started placing my own bets. Things were more relaxed back in those days.

Anyway, leave it to me to turn a hotel thread into one about going to the track.
