Cussing?

Probably been polled before....

I have my opinion but just curious...Is cussing and swearing ever acceptable? By coaches or players? Heard the F bomb droped more than a few times this weekend from coaches.

Cursing in front of any "PLAYER" is not acceptable. A discussion with another coach with no little ears around sure. My "F" bomb is slamming the score book down on the bench and saying outloud "UNBELIEVABLE" ::)

I am not going to say that cussing is acceptable because coaches should be setting examples on many different levels. Obvoiusly if it is 10U, 12U, or maybe even 14U such langauge (depending on how it was used) would never be acceptable. At the 16U and 18U level, the coaches may sometimes be outdone by their players.:)

Again not advocating it but older kids hear way more stuff on the way to and from the ball park then they hear at the ball park typically. Coaches should always try their best to control themselves, that is part of their role model status I beleive. Of course cussing should never e directed at an official at any time. But if the players overhear a coach talking to someone after the game about what a #$%& a particular official or other coach was then I would not see that as the end of the world. As long as they controlled themselves on the field.

Then again there are those coaches out there who work hard to push every button imaginable to get under another coaches, or the umpires skin. I especially dislike the coaches (especially those older coaches who have been at this for a while) who carry on, pump fists, and act as if they are one of the high school football cheerleaders while they are coaching at one of the bases. Saw this in the past fews weeks and one of the coaches I saw had to be in his 50's. Looked kind of childish (or Jr. High ish) and you could tell that it was directed more towards the other team then anything else. It would be nice if coaches after a while learned how to control their emotions. This may be acceptable at the 10U level to help pump up the players but at 16U and 18U it looks foolish at best.

I've seen this argued here before...and in my opinion...cussing in front of players, around players, near players, towards officals, between coaches, etc. is not necessary. The argument that they hear it in school, or use it with their friends, is totally irrelevent.

There are so many words in the English language...find better ones to use. I agree, there is a directness to cussing that other words do not carry, but broaden your horizens. The cuss word is not necessary. My college coach said to our team all of the time, "Swearing just demonstrates how limited your vocabualry is!" That phrase sticks with me.

I would have to say in general cussing is out of line, especially around youngsters. Whats interesting in some ways is that a 10u game could be that competitive that it would require an f- bomb.

But never the less is it really the end of the world. Seems that high moral out cry from those few that will always ask what would Jesus do!

Let Daddy tell you what Jesus should have done! He should ou used his powers to have someone at Uncle Stans empty the porta-potty in the back of the park.

Daddy,
You gotta learn not to stand downwind from any port-a-john. I've never seen you move so fast before.

It is never acceptable around players. Bad example. If you must cuss, then tell your wife to call you AFTER the game.

Cussing in front of any kid as a coach is not acceptable behavior. For this I apologize to all that have heard the occasional one slip on my behalf. I have never dropped an "F" bomb but I have slipped up before and it is not acceptable so.....

SORRY

Coach Derek

I ejected a coach in 10u slowpitch one time. It was in the first inning of the game and the second batter of the game on a bang bang play at first. He didn't like the call and used the f-bomb. I warned him and he laid out four more f-bombs and he was gone before the 3rd batter of the game. It also cost him his coaching position for the remainder of the season.

I don't allow cussing in the youth divisions by anyone and warn adults in co-ed and men's softball.

Okay, "been there done that" several times over 3-4 years. Not sure why, partially planned for emphasis, usually on the lighter side, once "not so much" .... regretted it every time. Better ways and methods, and teachings, to get "kids" to dig deep for effort & performance. Use and examples of constructive tools is better than nukes, since we are teaching them how to decipher and deal with challenges and stress in this process. When softball ends, hopefully character & good memories is the residue (not how stupid things got at times). Still working on that concept on "my" end, no holy attitude here ... ::)

Even Marine Drill Instructors are being taught differently now, regarding their training methods ... :-?

I spoke with my players before the season began regarding this very topic.. This is what I told them..

It is not Ok for you to curse and t is also not Ok for us coaches either!! I did explain however, that sometimes coahces do let one slip, not the old F-bomb. ( I dont think that one is ever a slip) i told the girls that if they hear a cuss word from one of us to point it out and let us know we have been caught. This does two things 1) it makes lite of the situation and makes them laugh and ultimately puts us coaches back in to perspective and 2) Makes us coaches more aware of what we are saying around the kids.

I did this because I know it happens and it's gonna happen. It shouldn't happen, but it does. So far it has worked out pretty well. Some may think it'sd silly, but you woul dbe surprised of how it works out even with older girls.. They are still just kids..

Try this one on for size...Varsity High School game...coach has a difference in opinion with a call, lets the plate umpire know his frustration (no profanity used) as he returns to the dugout. As the catcher approaches her postion on the field, umpire drops the F-bomb on her telling her that she needs to tell her coach to "shut the (f-bomb) up!"

Where is the professionalism?

So see it is not just the players, coaches, and parents, but the paid professionals.

disclaimer - I know, I know, it is not all umpires, it was just one and we should not judge all as being the same
