DD's Dad dilemma

so, if my dd is asked to play "up" for her eight grade team and catch during their tournament in 2 weeks, but she already had a committment to travel that weekend (since the 7th grade game schedule was over on the 15th), would she be allowed to play travel?

or should she stay in town, play for school, and miss her first travel tourney (and possibly forfeit since they may have only 8!)--maybe make a late afternoon game and for sure on Sunday (or would she be disqualified for playing the entire weekend for playing school ball that weekend?)

I know that it wont look favorably in terms of next year's spot for school ball to bail now, but the money has been paid and the dates have been set...... >:(

who can help me, OFCers?

delcruz, My suggestion is to play travel. Although she might be playing up, she will face better competition playing travel ball. At this age group travel has much better competition.

I agree with Heat29. Travel teams also do not like to be short players. If you screw a travel team that will get around to other teams and your daughter may have a hard time finding a team in the future. In my mind and in the minds of most other travel parent and coaches is--- TRAVEL COMES FIRST.

School committment ends on the 15th. Should be committed to travel team after that. JMO

She was commited to the 7th grade team not the 8th grade team right?

I would go play travel.

"Thank you for the compliment, 8th grade coach. It is very flattering that you would make the offer to have DD play with you in the tournament.

We don't think it is right to have a player "show up" to play in a tournament and take another girl's place - especially a girl that has been playing with the team all year.

For us, it is more than a matter of the best players playing - it is respecting the girls that have been playing for the team all year. They deserve their shot in the tourney.

So, we respectfully decline."

Now, if you can say the same thing to your DD's travel coach, you have the way to say no.

she's played 7th all year, but apparently the starting catcher is out for a band trip (nothing comes between a catcher and a trip to Cedar Point) and coaches believe DD can catch during tourney.

i just dont want to break any RULE for her eligibility. We have 2 other 8th graders on our travel team that wont even be allowed to play the entire weekend

:'( :'( :'(

Sorry but there is no chioce, she is on the School roster till the end of the schoool season. ?All players 7 and 8 grade are part of the school program, just like in the hight school were 9th graders are not released till the end of the high school season.

Sacham,...That would only apply if the school sanctioned the teams. Our Jr. High is in name only referring to the area the players come from.

It's not about whether travel is better or not,...In this case a travel tournament you would assume be full of better teams and it's only 1 tournament,....HOWEVER, the important word used here was COMMITTMENT. Your daughter, I am assuming, has not and had no anticipation of playing with the 8th grade team so she was able to COMMIT to the travel the tournament date as it was after the 7th grade season was over.
A year ago, the Jr. High team I coached was undefeated, the year end tournament was cancelled due to rain, I had girls COMMITTED to travel teams the next weekend, and that was FINE. We had to drop out of the tournament that I would like to think we had a shot at winning, but the girls had committments that needed to be honored.
AND HERE'S A BIGGY.............The 8th grade catcher is missing her game due to a trip to Cedar Point with her fellow Band members. If it is a year end fun trip, she should skip it. If it's a required performance trip that effects her grade , she should go.

thanks my OFC peeps!...the Bearmay set me straight as well...i'll look on the bright side, at least she has done a good job this year to be there, that's the way i have to look at it

and second, i dont have to cancel my soccer games with my other kids (we are undefeated and playing the best 2 teams in the league that sat)

Her coming-out party will have to be in Gahanna on the 26th...grrrrrr

Thunder I would like to think we had a shot at that (spring) tournament >:( ;D. We also had 4 girls missing (for travel teams) that weekend. The only loss we had was to you with 3 kids missing for a different travel tournament that day earlier in the year.

Moral of the story: Travel is more important. But as a coach I new this going into the season. I knew that these girls may be playing in these travel tourneys. I was diappointed because I would have loved to play Thunders team in the championship would have been a battle. ?:( :( :(
