Does Anyone Know How to Play 1st Base?

I have to say that 14u has been a lot better with 1st base play. 10u and 12u usually meant the biggest kid on the field cemented in the middle of the bag and she wouldn't move unless someone yelled snack time. I won't even get into technique, because I didn't see much of it until this year. Also, a lot of umps wouldn't say a thing to the 1st baseman about the constant interference with baserunners.
Agree-coaches have neglected teaching how to play 1st.

Umpires don't say anything about it. Not up to them to say anything. It's consider like "tipping them off".

That is why I say, you slightly bump her and go to second free of charge. But a good base coach will let the umpire know about the situation with 1B.... so he will be watching and give you that free bag/advancement.

How many ss-2B are standing on the bag at second with a runner getting ready to round second to go to third on an outfield hit ? Many of them... Because all they have been taught is to "go to the bag"... Coaches forget to tell them if there is no play... "get off the bag".

If I, as a coach, do not take full advantage of the other coach's lack of instruction... then I am not doing my job.

In battle, my team's girls are battling the other players to win... Thus, I am battling the other coach for the win.

It's a two-way street.

Wow, what a great adult. Let's pick on our youth by throwing out a " snack " remark. You must feel great about yourself. What's next the handicap?

My son is 11 and is the biggest kid on the diamond and he's handicapped (born without hip socket)
and he he's able to move off 1st base and has been taught how to play. By the way he loves snacks too!

It seems to be a lost art. Not a glamorous position so no one really seems to like to play there or fine tune their skills to be a good one.

Hamburger, plain, pickles only. :D

It is a lost art MCHammers. That it is. One thing about first basemen.. when they catch the ball... it's suppose to be for an out.
