Drop 3rd ?

All this talk got me thinking, so I looked up in the ATEC Scoring Guide everything I could find regarding uncaught third strikes. I came up with the following:

Uncaught Third Strike FAQ

  • Often referred to as a dropped third strike, but in the rulebook it is termed "uncaught third strike".
  • Designate in the scorebook as KWP or KPB. It is not an error unless the ball is picked up in time that an accurate throw or catch would have resulted in an out.
  • Credit a FC (fielder's choice) when runners advance while the catcher makes a play on the batter.
  • Charge a strikeout to the batter, even if she advances safely to first base. Likewise, credit a pitcher with a strikeout even if the batter reaches base safely.
  • Credit a PO (putout) to the catcher when she steps on home plate with the ball in her possession after a uncaught third strike with bases loaded.
  • An earned run is charged if the run is scored via an uncaught third strike wild pitch.
  • The run is unearned if the uncaught third strike was the result of a passed ball (or other error).
If anyone has corrections or anything to add, please do so.

I looked this up several places and the common scoring notations I found were
K = Strikeout swinging
Backwards K = Strikeout looking (thats why we always call them "special K's")

I follow this same setup. This goes back as long as I can remember.

From page 59 of the Atec Guide on the NFCA Website.

I stand corrected on the issue of a KWP, I guess in my limited experience my definition of ordinary effort may be different than others, in any case we once again step into the realm of the subjective, I both caught and pitched and considered a strikeout on a drop to be a PB if I didn't get down and block it and then either tag the batter or step out and make the throw, I have always coached my catchers with the philosphy that if our pitcher throws a ball to get the K they need to be ready to be the "goalie" back there and keep it in fron of them, and to expect the balls in the dirt.

Can I add though that there will never ever be a KWP on a called 3rd strike? LOL!!

Pitching: Wild Pitches/Passed Balls
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
1. A wild pitch is charged to the pitcher when the pitcher throws so high, wide or
low that the catcher can not handle the ball with ordinary effort and at least one
runner advances.
a - Any pitch in the dirt which advances a runner is deemed wild.
b - Only one wild pitch is scored regardless of the number of runners
who advance or the number of bases advanced.
c - A third strike that is not handled by the catcher because it was
wild, where the batter makes first base safely, is charged to the
pitcher as a strikeout and also as a wild pitch (KWP).
d - No wild pitch is scored if a runner was stealing on the release of
the wild pitch and only one base is advanced.
2. A passed ball is charged to the catcher when she fails to catch a pitch which
could have been caught with ordinary effort and at least one baserunner advances.
a - A bobbled pitch (not dropped) where a runner advances is scored
as a stolen base, not a passed ball, even if the runner decides to
advance after seeing the bobble.
b - Only one passed ball is charged regardless of the number of
runners who advance or the number of bases advanced.
c - A third strike that is not handled by the catcher and which should
have been with ordinary effort, and the batter reaches first base
safely, is charged to the catcher as a passed ball and the pitcher as a
strikeout (KPB).
d - No passed ball is scored if a runner was stealing on the release of
the pitch that got away and only one base is earned.
