Eastlake Summer Classic

I received a PM from the parent I referred to earlier in the post and I would like to apologize on here as I did in my response directly to her. I played for a team for 5 years that hosted their own tournament and without the parents, it would have been impossible.

As a coach, I was frustrated with how things started, and it was not her fault that she was not fully informed. I should not have directed any comments to her, and for that, I completely apologize. I fully realize how much hard work goes into hosting a tournament. The Crusher parents were extremely nice to my team and parents; I had a player who I thought broke 2 fingers and they were more than willing to help me out if needed and showed great concern for her well-being. So, again, I'm sorry if I offended you.

On a brighter note for the Eastlake tourney--it was one of the cleanest tourney's I've been too. The bathrooms were very clean, the garbage was removed regularly and the area surrounding the fields in general were "well-groomed." The concession prices were reasonable as well and they had some very neat items for sale at the tourney (from t-shirts to magnets to key chains, etc). There were a lot of teams entered into this tourney and they managed to keep everything on time for the most part and there was also a little play ground (at least at the Central Park fields) for the little kids to play on), and there was plenty of shade as well. So in that regard, the tourney was good.

I wondered when we were going to get back to the scores. This tourney had some good competition and some quality athletes to watch.

It is so sad that you sat on here and criticized how kids were dressed to play ball in the dirt. They are getting dirty and to complain about dust, wear sunglasses! Do you realize how hard it is to put on a tournament like that? Have you ever hosted a tournament yourself? There was great competition there and the girls had a ball! My daughter didnt complain about the dust one time, its amazing how upset you were and you weren't even playing in it. I think you are upset because you lost and probably to teams you shouldn't have. Instead of wasting your time typing crap on here and degrading something that took people hours and hours to put together, go put that time into making your team better so you won't be so upset next year. This is baseball, not barbie school and I agree to what the umpires said....now stop the whining! Oh, let me know when you plan on hosting a tournament so our team gets in there and we can see how good of a tournament you run. Hey, good luck to you next year!

Say what you like but the fields and umpiring were sub-standard and I am not the only one who feels this way. Winning is fun and losing is part of the game but poor officiating and bad fields..i.e..ditches, bike paths, dust,no chalk, wrong base length,..etc should not be a factor to the out come and it was. Clean up your own mess before you challenge someone else to run a tournament.

the eastlake summer classic was not run perfectly but tell me a tournament that has no problems? the fields were being watered between games however this barely cut down on the dust. the umpires are people people arent perfect. setbacks are part of the game and i would just like to say that you have to roll with the punches and play your best but never let someone or something take a game from you. instead of argueing with an umpire about a call ask him calmly about it them get your team fired up and make something happen for you. just a passing thought.

I can't speak for the other facilities that were used in Eastlake but I can speak about the 16U bracket that was held at North HS. The weekend was extemely dry and did make the field conditions dusty but the grounds crew did a nice job wetting the fields and all the fields there were set up correctly. I can't speak for all the umps the but 2 sets that I had over the weekend did a fine job. At one point or another during any game a manager could question a call but for the most part I thought they did a fine job with minimal problems. They got the Sunday brackets out to us in a very timely manner and were accessable to any questions we had. Overall our team enjoyed playing in the tourament against some good competition.

Just to put my two cents in... I think this tournament was poorly run. Coming from the Eastlake area myself, I was embarssed by this tournament. I am the girl that broke her thumb when the runner tried to jump over me, and due to poor officiating it probably cost us the game. However, when I got back from the hospital I did have the pleasure of sitting on the bench all day with dust constantly blowing in my eyes. Now if you want to call me "whinny" because my team didn't win or say that we should "go put that time into making your team better so you won't be so upset next", then I guess it was a fluke that we just won NSA States. Way to go Eastlake, all I got from finally playing a tourny in my hometown is 3 pins in my hand and a 3 month front row ticket on the bench.
