Right over here!
Good read. Ohio seems behind. Where is OHSAA?? yea they are just worried about travel kids playing during HS season. Kids safety is not as important. Kentucky has it right. Corners and pitchers! Well done KY!

Asked her reaction, Montana Fouts, an American Family Insurance ALL-USA High School Softball First Teamer said, “While I am pitching, I always wear a face mask."

I love it! I may be wrong, but I think the research I have read says OF and second base are the second and third positions most likely to get head injuries? I believe, if a player puts her glove on, the face mask goes on too. I think they should practice with them on, as well.

Most 2nd base and OF I see are slappers. Maybe the head injuries are not ball flying at them but collisions with other players either fielding a ball (OF) or baserunners running into the girls. So I don't think facemasks are needed for middle infield or OF.

Even though I make my DD where a mask, I think it should be the parents responsibility to make them where one and not another governing body. We're slowly being told how to raise our children.

Most OF and middle infield head trauma is not a result of a batted ball. It is a result of impact with the ground or collision with other players. I would think the rule in KY would apply to all practice as well.

ACTUALLY MORE PLAYERS ARE INJURED MORE FREQUENTLY WITH THROWN BALL THAN ANYONE VIA BATTED BALLS ACCORDING TO A DOCTOR THAT I SPOKE TO AT THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO LAST YEAR WHEN DOING RESEARCH FOR THE FACEMASK COMMITTEE. ALBEIT MUCH MORE SERIOUS INJURIES OCCUR WHEN A PITCHER OR CORNER IS HIT BY A BATTED BALL. HAD TWO OCCASIONS THIS SEASON THAT THE DD HAD HER HAND TWEAKED HARD BY LINED SHOTS, IT CAN AND OES HAPPEN FAIRLY FREQUENTLY, IT'S JUST THAT THE HARD LINER TO THE FACE MAY BE A LITTLE LESS FREQUENT IN OCCURRENCE. THIS IN NO WAY INFERS THAT MASKS AREN'T NEEDED, THEY MOST DEFINITELY ARE AND ALL PARENTS SHOULD REQUIRE THEIR DD'S TO USE THEM AT PITCHER AND THE CORNERS. DON'T PUT THE ONUS OF THIS ON THE COACHES AND ORGANIZATIONS, BE RESPONSIBLE AND PROTECT YOUR CHILD.
THE FREQUENCY OF HEAD INJURIES IF I REMEMBER FROM MY CONVERSATIONS WITH THE U of COLORADO DR., ARE INDEED THE OUTFIELD FIRST MAINLY MISREADING FLY BALLS, BUT MAJORITY OF INJURIES ARE STILL FROM THROWN BAL;LS THAT ARE MISSED BY THE FIELDER.

I disagree with the last part of this. It should not be left up to the parents, because obviously some of these parents don't have their children's best interest at heart. Mandatory the mask for pitchers and catchers and take this out of the parents and coaches hands!

Mark, your statement "Be responsible and protect your child" is the by far the most important reason why masks should be worn. I defy anyone to explain how a mask makes her less safe. Thanks Mark.

Bottom line here is Kentucky officals care more about their student athlete's safety than Ohio.
OHSSA Board members have been made aware of this issue. I have been contacting them the last 4 years to no availe. They simply do not care!!!
We in Ohio need to get new OHSSA Board members that care about student athlete Safety!!!

As a coach for a 14u team, I require my entire infield to wear a mask! I actually had a girl come to tryout that was going to pitch to a few batters live, and she wanted to pitch without her mask. I instructed her to put the mask on as it is a team rule.
I do allow the outfield to go without one. I am more worried about the hitting compared to collision which is why I don't require OF to wear one...
