Food for thought

truth....I reviewed the article and to my amazement only 8 people have viewed it so far...in our case it was a bicycle accident and a helmet that could have prevented our son from nearly being killed....seven years of seizures, partially paralyzed on the left side of his body...we as parents decided he did not need the helmet and that error nearly cost him his life!

The mask as pointed out in the article could have reduced or eliminated this from happening IF the parents would have mandated the wearing of the mask!

I can hear the parents and players saying it could not happen to me...I use to give talks about bicycle helmet safety and usually someone would always say," I rode a bike and nothing ever happened to me"...then I would put up on the screen Ken in a coma on a ventilator and the mother cried and said that was not fair to do that and I told her we didn't think so either and why did it happen to us and not you! Maybe you could find a way to deal with it better than us! He was never given a choice about wearing a helmet after that and as parents you make tough choices and some are not popular with your kids....who is in charge?

In the State of Ohio if you hit a person in a cross walk you own them according to the police....so if the person crosses against the light or not it is the the drivers fault...you could I guess be dead right in the cross walk...can you deal with that? If so why teach them to look both ways...take your chances as it could not happen to you!

get them the rip-it mask. Best in class in our opinion. My youngest loves it, oldest hates anything on her face. MANDATORY to play for me in the infield. Had to prove it the hard way with my short stop last week indoors. She went to Center Field.

So it looks silly right? Whats more important, looking silly, being disfigured or worse??

Only a matter of time in years, before it's a mandatory rule, then the bats will be weakened even more, or the balls will be made with softer cores...

It will be unfortunately after someone dies from a hit... Not a matter of if, but when...

I made our DD start wearing a mask when she got braces but she will keep wearing after they come off. We bought a gameface and then a defender, now we have a rip-it (the best so far)... she is 13 and kinda looks at me funny cuz i bought 3 different kinds at $50 each,, but $150 is better than pain and misery of taking a liner in the face. just my .02

I believe in the mask. we just have to convince the parents to make it mandatory.

At 17 and a Junior in High school my DD had to move over to 3rd in high school, she has always been a Middle infielder and a #3 or#4 junk ball pitcher with her travel teams. I thought since she had never played 3rd she should wear a mask. Our High school #1 pitcher has been injured so my DD has been pitching, to my suprise she walked out to the mound the first game with the mask. I am guessing it has been something that has crossed her mind while she was in the circle to.

She takes the mask off when she plays SS but wears it in the circle and at 3rd.

I personally think its something that needs to be seriously considered for a pitcher and 3rd basemen.

Uber I have run int travel teams where the whole infield wears the mask.

If we as coaches and directors of organizations cannot convince these young ladies to wear a mask, then these sanctioning bodies need to. I truly believe it is for their safety.

We played a team out of Indiana 2 years ago, the Shockwave, the entire team wore Masks even the outfielders lol.

DD started the trend with batting helmet masks at her high school. As parents, we made the rule - "No mask, no play". So... what about a college player?

I was glad to see the NFHS made them mandatory for batting helmets several years ago, rumor has it that it maybe come a requirement for the pitchers, to wear a face mask we'll have to wait and see!

NFHS 1-6-6: Effective January 1, 2006, NOCSAE approved face mask/guards are required on all fast pitch batting helmets.

FASTPITCH! Anything else, And you're playing to SLOW!

With the Cincy Static 12u Black it is mandatory for the pitcher and the WHOLE infield. Last year and this year. No one ever complains and you never have to tell anyone to put it on.

Coaches AND parents should require it. These are kids and it's just a game, lets take care of them.

DD is 13 wears her mask when she pitches and playes first. She will even wear it at practice. She feels funny without it now.

My DD has worn hers since 12u. We as parents require it. Funny though her spring ball pitcher refuses, even though she was hit in the face last summer and out for weeks. Her grandma is her pitching coach and team coach. Her mask still lays in her bag. Nobody in rec ball wore them until my DD did though.

I just ordered the rip-it fielders mask. I guess the DD will have to get used to it.

I was one of the people that thought the mask would interfere, and if you practice enough you don't need it. Last year was the 1st time both my daughters were required to have one. I didn't see any change in there play. Last fall a talented 3rd baseman took one in the face, but she had a mask on, picked up the ball and got the out with no trip to the hospital. Something bad can happen no matter how good you are. I encourage anyone I meet to get a mask!
