Outcast, you are correct IMO. I'd wear him/her out behind the plate on that one. I'd take my coach's shirt off and heckle quietly behind him (yes, I'd have another shirt on)...

Boulder - I remember her coming in from third in that red and blue gameface yelling bunt!!! You guys were our arch nemesis during MS ball a few years ago!

Fastpitchblue - thanks for looking, if an ump declares them illegal and the girls are not allowed to wear them, that ruling would apply to anything on the face of the girls' I would surmise, so all sunglasses and prescription glasses without that certification would need to go too...for that matter, I would push even contacts and mouthpieces...!! Yeh, I know that sounds idiotic, but look where it started...;&

Seriously there is nothing in the rules that I can find that states a pitcher or fielder may not wear a protective item on there face (jewerly is the exception) If there is, then some higher up had better be pointing it out to me, Because I have never, nor will I ever require a pitcher or fielder to remove their faceguard. (Unless required by the NFHS or OHSAA Rules.)

I agree with your quote. "I would surmise, so all sunglasses and prescription glasses without that certification would need to go too...for that matter, I would push even contacts and mouthpieces...!!"
I hate to say it and while I may not be the smartest Blue on the field, some Blues are arrogant and ignorant and have such an obsession about their authority on the field that it's a power trip for them, and I will refuse to work with the like of those.

How do I Ump?

1. I do my best to use good common sense when officiating.
2. I read nothing more into a rule, then is stated.
3. I do not abuse my authority when officiating.
4. And I'm courteous to both teams.

I would rather as an Ump, officiate a game that is Trouble Free! then to go looking for Trouble! But that is just me.

That's funny...if the girls are being a bit lazy during a practice or whatever, I always threaten to take my shirt off, for some reason that motivates them. I have NO IDEA why!! :lmao: Must scare them more than the threat of suicides!

anytime. I have several girls giving up their plastic game faces and switching to the rip-it fielders mask. It really is nice.

Hey, has anyone switched their helmet face mask to the rip-it version? I know there's talk of it not being approved, then approved, then... I'm thinking of making the switch.

At 17 and a Junior in High school my DD had to move over to 3rd in high school, she has always been a Middle infielder and a #3 or#4 junk ball pitcher with her travel teams. I thought since she had never played 3rd she should wear a mask. Our High school #1 pitcher has been injured so my DD has been pitching, to my suprise she walked out to the mound the first game with the mask. I am guessing it has been something that has crossed her mind while she was in the circle to.

She takes the mask off when she plays SS but wears it in the circle and at 3rd.

I personally think its something that needs to be seriously considered for a pitcher and 3rd basemen.

Dude, it could have been the bad hop she took in the chops at practice too! I think that shot rung her bell a little.

lol yeah it could be, took her that night to get a mouth piece since she hadnt previously ever worn one and always complained she didnt like them. While we were at Dick's got her the Game face. She doesnt mind it, her teammates crack on her about it, but they crack on each other about everything lol.

its hard as a coach or parent you dont want them to have to wear something if they dont like it but it is our job to look out for there safety we dont let them drink do we because they are not at a age where they could make that decision but we will let them step in front of a 100mph bullet potentially heading straight for there face without looking out for there best interest who is really at fault who is supposed to be helping them with decisions that could potentially hurt them .i knew everything from the time i hit puberty mom and dad were stupid but boy am i glad now for some of the things i did not have a choice in its a game bottom line not worth that kind of risk i love my dd enough do you

I have heard now from 2 seperate people that before or during a high school game the OHSAA umpire said the gameface was illegal as it was not certified (like a batting helmet cage). I don't think any gameface nor rip-it mask is certified. After those 2 discussions, I told my DD's, if they have an idiot OHSAA umpire that tells them they are not allowed to play third or pitch unless they remove their gameface to walk off the field. MY daughters play with gamefaces, if they aren't allowed, they don't play, and that's MY rule, which supercede any OHSAA umpire's 'opinion'.

NOCSAE "National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment" those of us who umpire this is what we are looking for on Helmets, Catcher's Helmet and Mask Combination they are required to meet the new NOCSAE Safety Requirements.

As for the GameFace and Rip-It not sure if the are NOCSAE APPROVED but neither can I find a rule that states that they are illegal for a pitcher to wear unlike the NFHS 1-6-1 Rule which states that the BATTING HELMETS must have a permanently affixed NOCSAE Stamp, as well as NFHS 1-6-6 BATTING HELMET FACE PROTECTOR, and 1-7-1 CATCHER'S HELMET AND MASK COMBINATION must have a permanently affixed NOCSAE Stamp. No mention of the Faceguard for the Pitcher, But I'll keep looking!

FASTPITCH! Anything else, And you're playing to SLOW!

Here you go.
NFHS rule book
Rule 1
Section 8
Art. 4
1-8-4 States......Defensive players are permitted to wear face/head protection in the field, except as in 3-2-14 (which states..Any equipment judged by the umpire to be potentially dangerous is illegal.), and as specifically required in 1-7 (ie. catchers helmet). Face/head protection worn by defenders shall have a non-glare outer surface.

1-8-5 States.....All equipment shall be worn properly and as designed by the manufacturer. Any equipment judged by the umpire to be potentially dangerous is illegal.

This doesn't state that the equipment must be NOCSAE stamped however, and that was the reasoning behind the decisions to make the masks illegal.

Well, we have the ripit and we'll see what happens this summer when our daughter wears it.

Ah, this summer you won't have to worry about it, it's the OHSAA umps that are going crazy(er)...the summer umps want the girls to play ball and want them to be safe and the good ones don't want to be noticed during the games, these OHSAA 'umps' need the spotlight it seems, so far anyway...

So what's the deal with the OHSAA umps? I always assumed they were, in the main, the same guys who umped all the other games as well. Do they have their own association or something? They seem to be a bit more, shall we say, facist?

This year seems to be particularly bad for some reason, at least to date. I usually don't see them during the summer tournaments, maybe one or two here and there, but for the most part we see the same umps most of the summer and I don't see those guys/gals doing high school/middle school games. I can only surmise, but maybe there's a reason for that! ;&

I will admit though, last Saturday we had a couple of great umps, I don't remember much about them and both games were good games. We also had a young lady umping a middle school game last Saturday and we run ruled the other team. Our coach wanted to keep playing because the other team drove so far to come play and she agreed and stayed and umped, despite the protests from the field 'ump'.

So they aren't ALL bad...I guess

I remember that game, first and last time i have ever seen a 3rd baseman called for unsportsmanlike conduct , for charging and yelling bunt

That was actually against Kettering MS, but OUTCASTfastpitch players were on that team and we all had a good laugh about it. Poor little Cassie about ran home after that!!

Hopefully my DD (Centerville HS) will get to face the monster again only this time in a real game instead of a scrimmage...!
