That is a very sad and tragic accident, but I have yet to see much support for protective masks anywhere in baseball. People seem to think only girls are vulnerable.
that is the last and worst thing any parent could ever go through and to think people frown upon a child with a mask on sad. my thoughts and prayers to all those involved.
poor thing...not to minimize or diminish, but sounds like a freak accident pitching bp from behind a net, not a place a mask would be used...very tragic.

I concur that the mask probably would not have been worn in this situation. Some are dead set against wearing a mask and unfortunately this does happen. A mask may have saved this kids life. I bet the parents would love to have spent the $50 for a mask and have their kid here today than to go thru this. I know I would.
So very sad, prayers for the family.
Perhaps we should also be advocating for helmets on every person under age 18 who is pitching behind a screen since umpires already make girls wear helmets while catching on the side lines during warm ups.
