'Love this topic.

I Umped HS for a couple of years, then hung it up. Why? Because I couldn't get any games assigned to me. Why? Because I asked the assigner for games at five area schools that were within a 20 minute drive from my place of employment. And, because I wasn't a member of the good-ol-boys club that the assigner favors, I got nothing. Nothing. All his long-standing buddies got the games.

The above statement also explains why you see so many gray haired Umps - they're retired, and can make it to 4:00/4:30 games without issue. Umps with day jobs aren't so fortunate.

Everybody keeps hearing "We need umpires", and it's true. Well, if you treat the new guys fairly, maybe the situation would improve...

There are certainly some fine umps but that " good ole boy " network stretch's far and wide . We have old codgers that can hardly walk , let alone run , calling our NAIA games , one guy in particular , you just hope doesnt screw up the game for either team . But dont think for a minute the " blues" dont talk about individual coaches and players . We had the chairman of the league umps have a mandatory discussion with our head coach , because of an ejection of him self and a player ( both warranted ) . The guy also throws in " your catcher is getting the reputation thru the league as being difficult to work with so you might want to tell her to tone it down " This was in the 5th game of a 28 game season .
To further this tale the ump of that game REFUSED , just Refused to call any change up our pitcher threw for a strike . Didnt matter . Not calling it . We lost that game and I received a warning for complaining about this as well . So in that conversation between the head ump guy and our head coach he says " the home team had a camera directly behind home and those pitches were in the batters box " . Total nonsense -- Our Catcher won 1 or 2 PGF national titles with the Bev' Bandits , she played at LSU , she has the best eye at the plate I've ever witnessed , she knows WTH a strike is ! So fast forward to the conference tourney , losers bracket game , we happen to be playing the same team and we have already turned in lineup card and warmed up our pitcher -- same damn guy calling the game , same damn result -- refuses .. flat out refuses to call a change up a strike .. his zone was so small both teams just stop swinging at any pitch close to a corner by the 5th inning . I again get warned for hollering at the guy -- for hollering " not fair to totally take a pitch away from our pitcher" Damn girl trains 9-10 months a year to have some incompetent dick refuse to call a change a strike . Their team was pissed too . And the league's head ump gives you the ole " Oh this guy calls D1 all the time " that guy is the best graded this n that " Just sours you on the entire investment in the game. He was so bad we decided we would never throw that pitcher again if he was calling the game.
