Help me understand this tryout process

Help me out here, DD went to a large origination tryout. There were about 20+ (each) catchers, pitchers and OF. Not once did this org take a look at those girls. All they looked at was infield, running and a couple swings in the cage. Not a problem, they must not need catchers, pitchers and OF. But wait, they are still posting on here that they need catchers, pitchers and OF. Come to their practice so they can take a look. Now here is the part I need help on, wasn't the tryout supposed to be for that? Don't get me wrong but my DD did get on the team she wanted from the start.

Yes I see that too....in our case...we advertised for pitchers and catchers and I pm'd some of them and got no responce and now I see those same posts still looking for teams for their daughters. I understand they may just not have liked what we had to offer but to not even respond and now they are still looking for a team. Additionally we had 3 players said they were coming to our last try-out day and then never even showed or had the courtesy to let us know they were not coming. Oh well, we have our team now and are very happy with the girls we have in place. Good luck to your daughter.

This time of year, it's somewhat typical for both sides of the fence. Generally speaking, people prefer to avoid conflict. Not that it is conflict, that is just how they perceive it. Sometimes, the hardest thing to say is the truth. It's just easier to walk away and ignore it, hoping it will go away. Wow! I think I just inadvertently quoted TheTruth08!

Not everyone is like this.

Yes. It must feel good to have something intelligent finally seeping from your fingertips, nac. Ha! Some organizations are very free with other people's time. They hold tryouts knowing full well they won't be looking at anything except pitchers, hoping to find one who can take them to the next level. Fifty of the best players in Ohio could show up-- players much better than the ones on their team-- and none would get a call. It's sad. Worse yet, it's unscrupulous. There's nothing wrong with keeping the players you already have. But for goodness sake, if you're not really opening any spots, don't go through the charade of having your own players try out along with others who have no shot no matter how good they are. It's wasting people's time and it makes your organization look bad.

Where are all the players that tried out for the big orgs and didnt get offers? There are plenty of small orgs out there that can offer just as much as the big orgs', and even for much less cost!

We try to inform all perspective players of potential or actual openings at all age ranges prior to our events and we update the team status regularly.
There are some players/parents that do not look at our web page or this site and show up anyhow to try out for a filled position but, that is usually a small number.

As far as contacting those that did not make it... I try to do it the same night so they can go to the next available tryout as does our other coaches.

Now we did not have 500 and Honestly; I have been at some of the largest organization tryouts and none have the facilities or staff to pull off this amount in a reasonable time / weekend... 500 in two years maybe....

We had 109 first day 60 plus the next two tryouts... I think that most organizations see a drop off after the first tryout ... We also do not take players "just to take them" and we do try to find homes or direct players to a team where they may have an opportunity for many that do not make a Cincy Static team...

As a coach I can tell you that with some kids, they can be ruled out just watching them warm up and throw. Still, you can't go up to the parent and tell them to leave (I suppose you could but face scorn for not giving them a "fair" chance to showcase their talent) and not waste everyone's time, so you put them through all the stations and develop a "fair" evaluation of the total player. It could well be that the coaches didn't see the athleticism they were looking for to move on to that last stage of the tryout which is usually - pitchers and catchers.

Well when your at the last tryout of 7 tryouts held all over the state over 6 days its manageable. Each age group had there own seperate numbers and did not reuse numbers was my understanding, each girl got a new number. My DD's number was above 500 and there were about 80 girls there that one day. If these numbers were around the same at the other 6 tryouts that would be around 560 girls. Which would be over 500 as my guess.

Like I said, my DD got on the team she wanted to be on all long. And I was not asking for the coaches to ask the girls to leave early, or wanting a phone call. I guess what I was trying to say was if your team has a need then why not take a look at the talent that is there in front of you? You never know what is there. I've seen some pitchers that couldn't walk and talk with zero athleticism but throw a mean ball. And no my DD is not a pitcher. So coaches if you can say that you can tell that a kid is not worth looking at without seeing a single pitch, then why are you wasting your time and talent at the travel ball level? Maybe that's a little harsh, but it was a little harsh for that team to waste a lot of kids time, because there was some talent there.

Here is another thought, if we are to the point where this is big time tryouts. Why don't teams request a resume filled with their stats from these kids? To be honest, they really only get 10 mins at most to shine at these tryouts.

Ok, I've been ranting long enough.

I think the answer to this depends on the age and make up of your team. If you are carrying a large college showcase type roster and have players that can accept a role where she pitches every third game, has a DP and sits the bench the rest of the time then you absolutely give them a look.

I can tell you at 12u we had a girl who really couldn't do much in the way of fielding, running or hitting so when she tried out to pitch I wasn't expecting much. Much to my surprise she could really bring it. Ultimately however, we declined to offer her because we knew she could never beat out our other players for playing time when she wasn't pitching. I think at the younger ages such a level of specialization won't be acceptable to players and parents.

We showed up for a "large organization" tryout and for the first 25 min. of a 50 min. tryout the head coach stood and talked to a parent of a returning player. they never wrote down a time, which i understand they maybe looking for a certain time. That org is still looking for players also!!

That's just the way it goes.....been doing this a long time! Just because an organization holds a tryout...no matter how big or small the tryout or the organization is.....they are not obligated to take a girl. It's tough out there....lots of teams and lots of girls. If you don't make it, for whatever the reason, just chalk it up as "not a good fit" and move on!

That is exactly what we did, just think its funny that they didnt actually "look" at any of the kids there and they are still looking for players!!!
