Sorry, but this is gonna be a vague post until I can find my rule book. ?The rule book used in Ohio High School games states that if there is no available substitute when the runner comes to bat then she is out. ?Don't remember the specifics, so the rule may have been referring to a pinch runner, but will list the specific rule once I find the rule book I took to our last tournament. ?Still unpacking from our end of the year tournament. :)

Georges,

This could not happen in a HS game. In HS, a CR must be someone who is not in the game, therefore she could not come to bat.

Georges,

The rule you are thinking of must be the rule covering what happens when a team is playing with exactly nine players, no subtitutes are available, and one of their runners is injured and must leave the game (rule 3-3-8).

In that case, the previous batter not on base may be used as a temporary replacement runner. When the injured/removed player's spot comes up in the batting order, an automatic out is taken.

This rule applies only to the "short-handed" situation when a team must drop down to eight players, and is not part of the courtesy runner rules.
