High School Coaches Coaching Summer Teams

I know this has been beat to death but the 2009-2010 General Sports Regulations are out.

My interpretation is that a school coach can coach a summer team if the 50% rule is observed. If the school coach isn't involved the entire team can play summer ball together.

GENERAL SPORTS REGULATIONS 2009-2010
5.4) There is no limit on the number of players from the same school participating on the same team during the period June 1-July 31.

4.9) Members of the Interscholastic Coaching Staff - Team Sports - In non-interscholastic participation (contests, tryouts, training and practices) in team sports, members of the school's interscholastic coaching staff may coach interscholastic squad members from the school district where employed for a maximum of 10 days from June 1 to July 31. The 10-day limitation applies to the entire coaching staff. Each individual coach is not entitled to 10 different days for coaching.
Note: The Board of Directors may further limit the number of contact days during this period as specified in the specific sports regulations.

EXCEPTION 1: The paid or unpaid interscholastic coach employed by a Board of Education or other governing board may coach interscholastic squad members from the school district where the coach is employed as coach without limitation from June 1 through July 31 if the 50% limitation is observed. The 50% limitation is defined as a maximum of 50% of the members of a team as defined in the playing rules of the sport. The following chart indicates those limitations for OHSAA recognized team sports.

50% Limitation on Sport Number of squad members
Baseball 4
Basketball 2
Field Hockey 5
Football 5

Socker 5
Softball 4

Volleyball 3

Correct:
OHSAA said:
July 24 - The OHSAA has revised the sport regulation regarding indoor softball and baseball to reflect that members of the same school team are no longer permitted to participate on the same non-interscholastic indoor softball or baseball team in excess of the four player limitation (50-percent rule), with the exception of from November 1 to February 1 during the school year.

That's my understanding......

So Based on this, the 50% rule would apply to all indoor softball during the months of October & February. So don't get caught with more than 4 on your indoor softball team in February! ;o)

Pitchers and Catchers Start 2/22/10 & Coaching begins 3/8/10.

And HS coaches still can't coach an indoor team that has players from the school, right?

You should have your AD ask the question of the OHSAA but I was coaching in the org. you are in (years ago) and I believe the rules are such that you could have 4 from each of the middle schools and 4 from each of the HS and not violate any rules. Sometimes that situation can happen at 14U. Some freshman are still 14U eligible. The OSHAA rules divide student population by grades 7-8 and then 9-12. The also consider the different building/schools in the district to be separate teams. So for summer ball and the indoor rules you have some wiggle room if you are in a district with multiple schools of the same grade. As far as your specific question if a student has not been part of a school team you can coach them, the answer is yes and I would say they wouldn't count agaist the 4 but have your AD check and get it in writing from the OHSAA.

Any idea what the rule would be if a volunteer who sits in the indoor batting cages, because the school needs an adult there for liability reasons, coaches the summer team? The volunteer is not paid, is not a coach (i.e. never approved by Board of Edu.).

No He ( or She ) cannot but they can have a person they choose to coach the team as long as that persons not a member of that school coaching staff. Go to Sinclair in Jan and Feb to the indoor tournies there, youll find local HS teams playing and thier coaches setting with the parents.
