How long do you wait??

Now that tryouts are in full swing, how long should dd wait to hear from a team before she decides that they have not chosen her for the team. My dd has a couple of offers already but we have other tryouts. We don't want to leave the offering teams hanging but we also want to weigh our opitions and pick the best for her. However, when should we expect to hear from teams whose tryouts have been completed?

You raise a good question. I coach for an organization where it is the policy to call all the young ladies who have tried out, whether they make the team or not. We try to make the calls in timely fashion, absolutely no more than 1 week, most often within 48 hours. As difficult as it is to disappoint parents and players, we think it more ethical and humane to speak directly, rather than leave it up to inference -- as in "if we haven't called you by Tuesday, you haven't made the team." We do this for all age groups 12-U through 18-U.

I wonder what folks think about this question, but also the flipside as well. How long should an organization wait? In my line of work there is an "industry-wide" standard for how long an offer can be on the table. I'm not suggesting that we institute a standard, by the way. I'm just interested in what other teams and organizations do. If you offer a young lady a spot, how long (generally) do you keep it open?

The following requirement seems to work well for another youth sport:

"After tryouts are concluded, the club must contact the athlete within three days after the event to inform them of their status. Contact may be by e-mail, web site, phone call, or postal mail. Athletes should be informed that they are accepted, refused acceptance, or placed on a waiting list. Most clubs start offering positions to athletes immediately after their events. Large programs may need the full three days to get through the process of offering positions in their program.

The athlete and his or her family has a period of up to ten days after the conclusion of the final tryouts to accept a club?s offer. Athletes called back to participate with a program after the final tryout process (10 days) has been completed must be given an additional 4 days to accept or refuse an offer."

I think most quality teams and organizations will let an athlete know after the tryout...if there is question or bubble player a 3 day wait isn't out of line....the Athlete should have a 3-4 day period to accept or decline this way rosters are not left dangling and neither are the athletes....You have to figure if the kid is tryout for multiple teams it isn't fair to anyone to keep either the team or the athlete tied up waiting for commitments.....3 days either way is fair..

And what is your opinion if the organization is holding tryouts at different locations over a two week period ?? ?The amount of time between a tryout and a decision does not determin the quality of an organization. Communication is important throughout
the process.

You would be surprised how quickly they get backin contact with you if they really like your child. Lasers for example. Tried out this past sat. and heard from Laser Leader Last night....... It goes quickly unless you get the dreaded "No Thanks" or "Maybe next year" or "no call at all" which happens too.... So you may not hear back at all..... Or you could get the ltter that says you almost made it this year try again next yr after working on this, that and the other.......

We went to tryouts last Saturday and Sunday and heard back from all of them by Tuesday. So I guess I was just getting a little panicky. Thanks for all the responses.

Dogsdad, Thank you so much for your concern!! I'll let you know what she decides!

I think you should give feedback within a few days. I learned a lesson a few years back when my dd played on a good 10U team. We were told that the team was coming back and only went to those try-outs. The organization sent out letters two weeks later telling you thanks but no thanks. They brought in a bunch of kids from the same school district the coach was from. He didn't make it thru the year, but he ruined a very good team.
