We are 12U and we've cut down to once a week. We will pick it back up to 2 times a week in December. Pitchers and catchers go more often though.

We are pretty much done with team practices.

It is all skill building for the next few months.

Pitching once a week and open hitting 2-3 nights a week (girls can come any day).

This is open for all age groups.

We do the team pitching in a group setting with a pitching coach to make sure that the girls are actually pitching, to see the progress, and to also keep them in a groove. Especially the 10U girls. They need to practice and learn and the group setting is really fun for the girls.

We bring in a hitting instructor for the open hitting. And we encourage all the girls to go see an instructor once every couple of weeks in a one on one setting.

All of this is very informal since in our opinion it is the off season and many of the girls play other sports. We run it very low stress and low intesity.

When the players are working on their own you will see the difference.

Just because they are working with a team does not make them better, it is when they are willing to work on their own that it takes it to another level in my opinion. :D

12u - we are taking Nov and Dec off from softball related activity. We do have two catcher/pitcher sessions, but other than that nothing. The girls are doing The Rubberband Gym every thursday until January. Then we pick it back up and go full bore.

10U

Six times a month since October.
-3 General practice, defensive skills, 2 hours a shot
-3 batting practice, 1 night the entire team for two hours, the other two nights are 1 hour for 5 girls, 1 hour for six girls with a private instructor each night

Once January hits it will be four and four for the month.

My daughter is pitching at least three times a week. Once with a private instructor, one night is a general pitcher and catcher night, one is a clinic of some sorts. The current clinic is being run on Sundays at Canisius College (DI).

Totally agree and understand. DD has been with private instructors weekly for 2 years and it does make a huge difference.

This is of course when the magic happens.

If anyone can figure out how to instill drive and passion give me a call......I have a son who could use a dose.........LOL

Seriously, this is why you keep them going and try not to be too much but enough to make sure they stay with it until they decide if they are passionate or not. They can only go so far if driven by an outside force (parent, coach) but once the drive comes from within there is no ceiling.

18U DD - Fall Tournaments over, break for a month. Team Hitting inside on Sundays until the start of HS ball. Hits w/instructor one x week. Lifting during the week w/HS and keeping grades up. Strength and Agility w/team 1 or 2 times weekly when work/HS allows. Working 2 to 3 days a week and enjoying her last year of HS. Applying to colleges.

16yr old 18U Tm - On Break until December. Fall Tournaments over at the end of October. Pitching once a week (velocity) on her own until December and pitches 3 or 4 innings weekly during HS indoor League. Tm Practices start December in full size field house 2xs month and will include live pitching/hitting, fielding work. After many years of playing yr round, we are finding a way to rest the arm and trying not to freak if every pitch isn't "on the money" during her break! Lifting during the week w/HS and keeping grades up 4.08 and shooting for a 4.33 after this year.

14U DD Tm - On Break during Nov and Dec. Hits weekly in private instruction, plays indoor with HS. Full time BB player. Lifting with BB Tm and doing speed and agility work daily. Will start weekly Tm Practices in January. Starting back to pitch and catching other pitchers as time allows. Working hard to keep grades up in between the madness of her 1st year as HS athlete 6days a week.

DD is doing a velocity program that requires 3x / week, workouts are an intense 40-50 minutes. Rest the off days except for hitting. Working hard on grades. DD will be doing a few winter camps this year at colleges of interest. Team practices are 2x / month.

Thank you for the information on this subject. I was just getting a little concerned with my DD's team not practicing. Now seeing that some teams take a few months off I am not so concerned. I have definitely been behind the learning curve as far as travel softball goes. Thankfully, I have been fortunate enough to find excellent private instructors.

I am reading a book titled; the Talent Code by Daniel Coyle, that explores what some of the best do to train. He talks about athletes, tennis players, singers, musicians and has visited their facilities around the world.

A common factor is practicing slowly to perfect the moves or what he terms deep practice.

From his book, "When you are practicing deeply, the world's usual rules are suspended. You use time more efficiently. Your small efforts produce big, lasting results. You have positioned yourself at a place of leverage where you can capture failure and turn it into a skill. The trick is to choose a goal just beyond your present abilities; to target the struggle."

When we practice the matrix drill we are trying to get the player to understand every movement from the ground up and that includes balance, vision, tracking and the proper sequence it works in and that takes time . However the benefit is huge and then when we start to increase the effort their body takes over and you can see how smooth the effort becomes to accomplish the task. You often hear bat speed, quickness, rotation etc. You must first learn the moves and for me there is no short cuts, just short term thinking that there is one.

In the book a music teacher tells the student you are not moving slow enough as you are practicing if someone passing by can recognize the song.

Google the word myelin to understand where he is coming from.

From the net...."As part of the nervous system, myelin lines nerve fibers to protect and insulate neurons. Myelin aids in the quick and accurate transmission of electrical current carrying data from one nerve cell to the next. When myelin becomes damaged, the process involves numerous health conditions, including multiple sclerosis."

"Nerves are like an electrical wire. Current (the message) must be conducted along a path (the nerve) to successfully get from point A to point B (the brain to a fingertip). The electrical current must travel without being corrupted, scrambled, diverted from the proper path, or leaking energy. Therefore, myelin is like the layer of plastic insulation surrounding an interior wire, which is the nerve. Additionally, myelin speeds the conduction, so it's also analogous to a secondary coating on the wire that reduces the resistance facing an electrical current. The interior wire represents the series of axons and nerve cells that relay the electrical impulse."

"Deep practice is built on a paradox: struggling in certain targeted ways-operating at the edges of your ability, where you make mistakes-makes you smarter. Or put it a slightly different way, experiences where you're forced to slow down, make errors, and correct them-as you would if you were walking up an ice- covered hill, slipping and stumbling as you go-end up making you swift and graceful without your realizing it."
