How should you tell a kid they've been cut?

My DD had it both ways and said it doesn't really mater to her. Last year for 8th grade BB they passed out the envelopes. She didn't make that team. This year for 9th grade s occer they had every kid go into the office for a one on one. She made JV Gold but while this was going on I was waiting outside waiting in the heat. I would have preferred the envelopes to get them out quicker.

My guess is like her most kids don't care how personal the news is delivered. Parents are too sensitive.

I agree, parents read too much into this stuff. Sometimes coaches need to move on. Why would they spend time with kids not on the team? DO you know how long that could take? Its a sport and sports have cuts, just deal with it parents. The respectable orgs will deal with it the best possible way but as several has stated there is no good way.

My DD told me her middle school volleyball coaches talked to all the players trying out, whether they made it or not. Another family at another middle school said they just posted the names of the girls who made it on a board after the tryouts. Nothing uniform about it, just like travel softball.

Wish I could offer more on the rule. Tried to sift through OHSAA, then realized I would rather be plucking weeds by hand. It was about as easy as a parent trying to get their hands on one of those top secret ASA rule books. Thought it was a good question.

haveaclue - unless the rules have changed in the past couple of years, she can play 8th grade this year and next year. There is no rule about playing up in Jr.High and not being able to play with same grade the next year.
Talk with High school A.D. on this.

You will see schools whom do not have alot of players out for a grade, a 7th grader will bump up to 8th grade. This is for all major sports in Jr.High.

No matter how you slice it, it's hurting the feelings of a girl who spent the last year looking up to you, learning from you, and working her butt off for you. It sukks...period, but honesty is essential.

Unless something is clearly not right, I give coaches the benefit of every doubt with cuts and the manner of doing them. I have done more than my share and have always done it face to face for school ball and on the phone for travel ball, but there are circumstances where a letter or an e-mail or some other method makes sense.
No matter which way it's done, some people aren't going to be happy with how it was done.
