Howard Kabota doesn't know what he is doing!!!

I worked with my Jr. High team on some of Howards drills. We didn't get at technical as we do with our travel players but we covered the fundamentals and theories of Howards techniques. We talked about momentum, glove foot forward, moving through the ball, etc. I ran into some of the girls summer rec coach who started to have practices with them. He ask me what are we teaching these girls. They are doing this weird stuff with their footwork, they are running up on the ball, etc. He said, "I was always taught wait on the ball, to spread your legs, get down on the ball and field the ball under you body then pop up and throw." He said, "I'm going to tell them to go back to the old way on my team." Maybe Howard's all messed up. I know the Slammers work with Howard often. And I thought BigTrain knew what he was doing.

Don't worry I get the same questions from parents and other coaches. Sometimes it takes time for some to see the light! I'm sharing my DVD with coaches to show them why I teach his methods.

You need to get over your Bigtrain obsession....

Yeah, I know. I'm a closet fan of his system, determination and commitment. I'll get to see them play next week.

Why people so often refuse to learn from people who have been successful is beyond me.

I'd say it's because this coach probably never heard of Howard Kobata. ?People who aren't immersed in the softball world, like us fans of the OFC, are going to go back to the way they were taught, never minding the fact that they played 20 to 30 years ago and that they played baseball no less. ?Baseball and softball are the same after all, since both games use a bat, ball and glove ?;)

My original post only referred to JoeA1010 comment "Why people so often refuse to learn from people who have been successful is beyond me." ?I guess I only glanced at the original post, and didn't see the part about charging the ball, which I'm sure most coaches have always taught.

It doesn't matter if he ever heard of Howard. Why would you teach players not to charge the ball?

It's far more important to charge the ball in softball than in baseball for two very obvious reasons:

1. The hitter has a shorter distance to run to first base

2. Baseball players have stronger arms and the ball is easier to throw

Major League shortstops can wait for a high hop in the hole and still plant and throw out most hitters.

Softball shortstops who wait for a high hop have almost no chance to throw out most hitters.

Infielders in baseball and softball who don't field ground balls with their gloveside foot forward are NOT fielding in rythm, and therefore are not getting rid of the ball as quickly as possible. Getting rid of the ball late can often result in a hitter beating out an infield single.

I have never heard of this Howard fellow, but it sounds like he's just teaching solid fundamentals. Any coach who says he was taught to WAIT on the ball was taught incorrectly.

It is amazing how many travel coaches never heard of Howard, not just high school or rec league. You might not expect them to know of him.
Unless it is my kid, let them teach them to sit back and wait. It is to our advantage we teach the Howard methods.

WOW, No Charging? Im 35 and ever since i was a little tike i was tought to charge the ball. With all the speed on the bases, a defensive player needs all the help they can get.

I'm not normally one to correct everyone's spelling (except my friends' horrendous e-mails), but Howard's last name is Kobata.

I might be wrong, but if BigTrain was still posting, he could correct me. I think the slammers were one of the first teams to get Kobata to come to Ohio and teach . I have been to three of his clinics and still had to buy his DVD's to cover what he teaches. He is intense and taking notes , well I gave up when I hit drill # 32.

Joe will get a chuckle out of this. Look at Hillhouse's web page. He spells it Kabota on his web page and they even work clincs together!.

Statman: I've got something you can bite on, but I can't afford to lose it right now. Here's something else: I PLAYED division I baseball and professional baseball; and I PLAYED fastpitch softball at the World Class level for many years. Played shortstop, batted third, hit over .400. Jenny Finch might have been carried as our team's fourth pitcher at certain tournaments.

I've never heard of Howard Kobata because I don't have any questions. Apparently, he has become wealthy and famous because so many people do. There's nothing wrong with that. But taking on a smugness about having to depend on someone else to teach you and your kids the game is, at least, laughable.

Truth, I don't see how anyone taking an interest in learning more about the game is laughable at all.
