injury question

Recently my DD started complaining about a popping sound in the collar bone area of her throwing shoulder. When she would make the throwing motion her clavicle woud protrude forward in a very noticeable manner. After a week off we tested it out and it came back and this time there was some pain involved so we shut it down and went to the ortho...

After examination the doc put her in a sling and ordered a CT scan because the xray was not definitive. His diagnosis is SC joint instability and he called the injury 'potentially career ending'

SC joint are usually injured in a traumatic way like a car wreck...she has had no trauma.

The other possible explanation is a growth plate fracture at the SC joint which can mimick an SC joint dislocation in that the clavical will float forward with over head arm movements.

Has anybody out there ever gone through either of these injuries? I can't accept this would be the end of the road for my DD at 13...?

Good luck. I hope it works out and not the career ending injury.

Sorry to hear about that. Hopefully all ends up well. Hard to imaging a career over at 13years old. Praying for good news.

Thanks, Lew.

The only real hope here is that this is a fracture. She had her CT scan last night and we get the results on Friday.

There's always a risk of injury at most anything you do in life. Kids are growing up, their bodies are changing, and stressing a joint can cause problems if not diagnosed and corrected. All we can do is be sure she is using proper mechanics whewn throwing at every throw that should minimize the stress, then work up the stamina to a point where she can perform with others her age. Overuse is never good and every player has their own limits. Some simply cannot play the game. Sad, but true.

I hope it turns out to be correctable and with some rest she'll be able to continue. kids are very resourceful. They heal and bounce back at times that even the medical professionals are amazed.

The official diagnosis is a moderate sprain of the SC joint which caused a spontaneous subfluxation of the collarbone. Doc does not believe the injury will end her career but she will likely miss most, if not all of the summer season to let the ligaments in the joint heal properly and gain strength.
Doctor says he believed the injury was cause atraumatically and that it is likely she has had it for awhile but was not aware of it until it started to pop. From what I can find on the web, this specific injury will heal with time and rest and that patients who have had this (most common in younger people/athletes, though still rare) can resume normal activities including athletics with overhead arm movements without problems. Though it is still possible for the subfluxation to happen again. But more ice, rest and advil should yield a return to action.

Sorry to hear about your DD... Just FYI I am sure you are aware but sitting out is going to be very difficult on your DD and on you as well :) My DD had a devistating ankle injury the beginning of October and still is not "cleared" to play. She just started pitching and hitting again and had to watch pretty much an enitre basketball season and Middle School softball season go by. Physically of course everything has been hard but mentally I think it has been worse. We tried to keep her involved as much as possilbe she is the team "manager" and that has seemed to help. I try to remind her she is still part of the team but a hard thing to go though at 13 years old! So best of luck with her recovery!

Thank you, DQ...she is a mix of emotions ranging from happy that the injury wont end her carer to mad and sad that she can't play this summer at ASA State, Lasers, Orville, etc. She will be with her team and coach already has duties for her to chart pitches and to build towards calling pitches to keep her 'catchers mind' sharp. Will it be enough? I hope so. I have to make sure that I keep it in perspective. In this regard I have much to learn from my kids. :)

Al, I sure hope Moose has a speedy recovery. Meghan is a good kid, and she will be missed by her mates. Hopefully Ashley and I will still see you at the ballpark.
