Substitution question for injury situation

Calling bretman and other rules experts....

ASA tournament. Team has 10 girls in uniform and 9 of them are in the lineup (no dp/flex). 10th girl (uniform #8) substitutes for the 6th girl in the lineup (uniform # 35). Player hitting 8th in the lineup (uniform #12) is injured and needs to leave the game. The girl that had been removed (uniform #35) is allowed to enter the game for the injured player. So, we have a situation where uniform #35 has occupied two different places in the batting order in the same game (6th and 8th). Umpire said that this could happen due to the injury. Is this correct?

Nope. I'm pretty sure that she can only come back into the line up where she originally came out. We had the same thing happen in a game (ASA) and were not allowed to bring in the sub. because she could only go back where she came out.

I don't think you have to be an ump to know that cannot happen. All I've seen over the years is the team with the injury would have to take an out every time that girl comes up. Sounds like you got shafted.

I don't have an ASA rule book, with me, but I have two others and no such rule! Bill is right you got shafted.

I took a look at the rule book at the time that it was happening but couldn't find a provision that would allow this. Fortunately it didn't negatively impact the result of the game (from our perspective) but I wanted to clarify w/ the larger community in the event it comes up in the future.

thanks to all.

As already noted...you can't do that! A player re-entering the game may only re-enter in the same line-up spot.

The only option provided by the rules is to continue the game under the "Shorthanded Rule". That let's you continue with 8 players batting and an automatic out being taken in the empty spot vacated by the injured player.

This rule does not apply to ASA since there is no mandatory playing rule.

This rule is a rec ball league rule that exists when teams are required to play all their players. The idea is not to penalize a team that puts in all their subs in the game in the 3rd inning like they are required to, and then has someone get hurt. The rule is that in an injury situation the substitute is chosen by the coach of the opposite team, but in my experience they usually just tell the coach with the hurt player to pick whoever they want.
