a few years back my dd had discoverd the joys of stealing signs from the catcher and moving in and out of the box as the catcher set up to catch, she got pretty bold at this and was having a great time with lots of success until a catcher called time went to the mound came back and set up outside, my dd crowded the plate expecting an outside pitch and lol was shocked to realise she had been baited, the pitcher spun her helmet on her head so hard she was looking thru her ear hole, was it a lesson learned,,, you bet, you never know what is discussed between the players on the field, jibes, pokes , little jestures we as parents and sometimes coaches dont see,,,, but believe me they do .............

As a former baseball pitcher, coach, and father of a softball pitcher this pitch is a must.Although this thought goes against the p.c. on this site sometimes it is called for.You pitch tight inside and not at the head.Sorry if this offends fellow readers, but this is ones opinion.Great debate on both sides though.

I am a coach and I say NEVER NEVER NEVER ..... >:(
Why in the world would I tell a player to intetionaly hit another player because she hit a home run? Should I tell my DD to go in spikes up to the SS who just made a diving catch or how about telling my catcher to throw the ball at the head of the batter/runner who just laid down a perfect bunt? Or even better should I try to take out the coach for calling a suicide squeeze play that worked to perfection......You play the game with integrity, and earn respect . Tip your hat to the player who hit the home run, remember what pitch was called and where it was thrown and make sure you pitcher or you as a coach does not make that mistake again....call me a softy call me what you want but I will NEVER tell anyone of my ladies to hit another player.....JMHO

What is this "JMHO" I am always seeing at the end of posts?

Am I paranoid because I think it some kind of code from aliens led by Tom Cruise that want to take over the world??

Oh, thanks. Duh I guess. I hate texting, don't get it. I just call, I mean why not when you have a phone in your hand. My girls though, man can they text. Taking their phone away is the only punishment I have that works. ;D

OK Ringer. This topic is an excellent example of the psychological differences and mental thought processes between men/women boys/girls. Boys/men seem to inherently have the revenge mentality in baseball, and I think that's where plunking originated - a sort of warped "I'll teach you" tool. That's exactly the approach the men coaches on this thread are taking.

How about asking your DD? Does she think like that? My DD said she simply plays the game as it unfolds. Has she intentionally plunked a batter? NEVER! And she NEVER will - it's simply not a part of the game. However, she has thrown MANY inside pitches when the batter was hanging over the plate, but she's pitching at the strike zone, NOT THE BATTER! Sure she's plunked many batters - but NONE intentionally - especially NOT with a revenge attitude! I remember one game where a girl was hanging WAY over the plate and an inside pitch hit her in the (upper body part that men don't have) and she dropped like a rock. She got up thinking she was getting first base - but the ump called her out on strike three! Intentional? NO! Revenge or lesson teaching? Not in the least.

Remember guys... fortunately women have a different approach than men. Competitive? You bet!! But IMO, women have more of a team approach as opposed to a "I'm an all-star carrying this team" mentality. Anything stupid reflects more on the whole team, not just them as an individual.

Would anyone really tell their kid to just punch, kick, etc. another kid at school or at the mall for something they didn't like? What's the difference here!!! At least here you have the option to beat them on the field to shut them up. Have I thought about it, yes, of course. And I've thought about her kicking the crap out of some kids at school, actually doing it, NEVER!!

I would never tell my pitcher to do it but I sure have thought about it.. I've had this happen to me many times.. I'll be catching and the girl will come up to the plate and either use her foot or bat and fling dirt ALL OVER me.. I really hate it! >:(

Pitcher throws her best pitch, batter swings her best swing. This what compitition is, period. If you have to hit a batter intentionally, get off the the pitching rubber.

Intentionally hitting a batter, has been used since the game was invented. I do not condone hitting a batter because she hits a rope, pitch around her if you can't keep her in the park. The pitcher has a right to defend the plate, if batter wants to push the limit I think good pitchers will throw threw them to reclaim the area.

The pitch is usally used to defend or protect your players. I just witnessed a 18u pitcher hit a batter who was 2 for 2 in the game and was not in tight. The pitcher then wanted to smile and chuckle about it. There was little doubt what had happened. I think - that many teams would had demonistrated that they have the pitch too.

I was in a 13 inning game once and my oldest DD game to the plate and was hit square in the back the first 2 times. There was former SS of ours playing on the opposing team. I look at her and nodded my head and told her I we have that pitch too. She immediately called time and went to the pitcher, after a short discussion - returned to her position stating "I took care of it- Coach". The game was played another 8 innings without incident.

No one will ever admit to intentionally hitting a batter, but believe me its part of the game.

If utilized to protect your teammates from another teams malicious behavior -so be it.

I wish we played in a perfect world where everything was sunshiny everyday but we don't. So until the umpires control bad behavior then teams will feel the need to defend the homefront.

Coaches need to police there players, when their behaviour is heading down the wrong path, its in the JOB description, I would have went to the mound in the above situation and told my pitcher if you hit somebody lets not be reflecting we did it on purpose. smiling and laughing is not the way to b a professional. Unless you want to put a target on your friends back.

Good luck, God Bless and be Safe!

PS may nobody lose a single game this season - that way the everybody is happy!

No place for it when dealing with amauters. The pros I really dont know, they live in a different world by a different code then most of us, so I leave it up to them to police themselves.

Any coach that tells a kid to hit another kid is a putz.
