Is it unethical to order a player to be hit intentionally?

Some of you are avoiding the question (perhaps not on purpose) ... whether this particular situation was called for by the coach or not we'll probably never know ... the question is should a coach ever do it ...

The post is " Is it unethical to order a player to be hit intentionally?" I cannot speak for anyone else but my reponses were based on that, not a particular situation or a different scenario.

Your a little thin skinned here in the Midwest. There are circumstances that warrent the brushback pitch. On the west coach they play a more serious brand of softball, it is played and coached no different then baseball period!

There not talking about a "brushback pitch", I think there referring to intentionally hitting a batter in the back, or worse yet going head hunting....... I would hope your "serious" softball would frown upon that type of game? Because you know here in the Midwest ........

Keep in mind the high school rule is different than in travel ball. In high school starting this year , the hitter does not have to make an attempt to avoid being hit. So you now expose the batter if you intend on hitter her. They have been instructed to take the hit to get on base!

Whose to say the coach called for it? These players have minds of their own, and i have no problem thinking that it could have been the pitcher herself busting a player after giving up a couple long balls. Im sure pride could come into play sometime. I wouldnt automatically assume it was the coach.

It came from the coach. I saw the coach talking to the pitcher before the inning started. I was told after the game that she was told to hit the player coming up to bat. The pitcher has a very close relationship to the person that told me.
I know the coach ordered the intentional hit. Nice of the pitcher to have the class to not obey her orders.

You cannot tell a child to hit another child. *** are we doing by asking a CHILD to do this???

Now as a pitcher who sees a batter taking away a pitch by crowding the plate I say, throw inside to knock her tale back. This is part of the game and but it has to be the mentality of the the pitcher who wants to own her pitch and the plate. No way in hell should an adult ever instruct to hit someone because they went 3-3 or hit one out. Hit yourself or your coach for calling those pitchers.

Yes its unethical. I know a young lady that was hit by a pitch (on her knuckles) probably a screw ball that was probably upper 50's lower 60's. I DO NOT think it was intentional at all....

anyway, this young lady had four bones broken in her hand. Her index finger bones was shattered so bad that she now has a rod in that finger. Her middle finger bone was jammed into her hand and it required surgery to remove that bone from the palm of her hand which included cutting the muscle...she lost some cartilage and a tendon that cannot be replaced. I believe she had a graft tendon (but I don't recall).

Long story short, that was last year and this young lady still cannot grip a ball, let alone a bat and she is a sophomore in HS. Very sad.

Unethical, unnecessary and probably should be illegal! If the above injury would have happened to my DD or a player on my team and I found out the opposing coach "ordered" it, I'm not sure what I would do ... but I'm pretty sure that if it ever went to court, that there would be one less coach out there having kids throw at other kids ...

The unwritten rules/traditions/paybacks/"macho-isms" of Major League Baseball do not apply to youth sports!

Mantle07 ... I fully get what you are saying about the pitcher owning the whole strike zone, and brushing back someone who is crowding the plate, but I am still confused by your comments about the west coast playing a more serious brand of softball, just like baseball. Are you saying that on the west cost, that adult coaches routinely tell youth pitchers to hit batters? If so, I wouldn't call that "serious", I'd call it "irresponsible", but I'm guessing you don't really mean that?

What coach would want you to hit a player on purpose. Why would you want a runner on first base without earning it. I call that a dumb coach. Now there are times when you work inside but never to hit the player only to make them get off the plate so you can work your outside pitch better. and if they dont move then most likely they are not going to hit the inside pitch very well. If they do hit then you might have to work even tighter.

I have no inside info but my guess is we beaned a kid tonight on purpose and one of our kids that homered got plunked her next at AB. so two in tonights game against a conference rival. it happens and i'm sure neither staff ordered it ... I was certain my kid was going to get it .. 2 batters latter it happened. sad really , all the way around . could cost a kid an entire season.

I believe in the unwritten rules of the game, you crowd my plate I am coming inside. You choose to take one off the hip then thats your choice but get off my plate. No way would you ever throw at a batter because she went deep last inning, thats ludicris. No way would you aim at batter with the ultimate goal is to plunk her. As a competing player, you just lost again because not only did she take your tail deep last inning, but you and your coach have zero confidence that you can get her out at all so you allow her to get a 1st base pass.
