Is it right for a select coach to tell his 7th and or 8th grade players not to play school ball?

No. It just shows how selfish he/she is. It shows that he/she is concerned about wins, not overall (social and physical) development.

And I would say the same thing if it was reversed.

I don't think it is fair to make any kid choose to not play for their school.....not a coach I would let my DD play for. Next year my kid will be a 7th grader and eligible to play middle school ball and if her Coach even mentioned not playing middle school ball we will just find another summer team.

I agree. Any select coach who tells a player to miss out on all the memories made in high school or Junior high is a coach I would advise you to run from.

I guess i would have to ask, as middle school ball is not big at all where we live, why? Is this a case where there is only 3 other teams playing in their small league, and being such a new sport to middle school, maybe the teams are so bad that it just does not help the middle school players to play just yet, to the point of loosing out on travel practices and early tournaments..

My DD plays for her middle school but it is CYO so the travel teams are not affected, but CYO has been playing fastpitch for the last 9yrs and it is still horrible. We use it more of a practice than anything, but if she was not allowed to have travel ball team contact than we would not waste her time or ours in playing CYO, because it is that bad.

I think that school ball is a good thing for memories with friends and a good Preseaon camp for travel ball. Select ball is no doubt the higher level but the kids need that school pride thing that they get from playing it. Some schools do not have many stars on the team and this is another chance to make a players school time memory a good one.

I would bet a select coach would be worried that a school ball coach will be teaching bad things counter to select ball. I have that worry myself but I also played school ball every year and that is some of my best memories, except when we got busted acting stupid and punished made to do laps our senior year for 2 practices. hint; never get caught doing a stupid thing infront of a coach......we really sweated it out!

Yep, and there are a lot of high school coaches like me that wonder why these travel ball kids don't come back the following year any better then they were the year before......

As is the norm, I'm on the same page as wvanalmsick. I think school ball is important and some real benefits outside of just getting some reps.

Not only is it wrong. It' stupid. College Coach would always want to know/see how a kid does in their school program as much and sometiimes more then travel. There are all kinds os superstars out there and have the worst attitude in the world. That **** doesn't hold up in High School. Always a red flag when sally all star in Travel is sitting the bench or better yet didn't make the HS Team because nobody wants her on the team.

Regardless how bad the middle school team is, if the kid has expressed interest in playing NO coach should make them choose.

We have 5 players on their middle school team currently. I didn't, and wouldn't, try to discourage them from playing. It is not my decision to make, and I would not try to influence them either way. They will have the opportunity to practice each day, and play multiple games. If the middle school ball is not the greatest competition, those players will be hungry to get back to the tournament schedule we are playing this summer. They are all very competitive, and it will help our focus in the long run. If the middle school ball is competitive, then all the better.

Same here Buckeye Heat 97. I do not tell them one way or the other. I will say that if their school ball is sanctioned I would prefer they did not but that is their decision, not mine. If they want to play with their friends that is fine. You are only a kid once. I just wish some of the parents would realize that they are only a kid once as well.

I think it depends on the MS program. My dd's MS team has a coach from a top travel program, about 50% of the roster is kids involved with travel teams in the summer, and we are playing over 1/2 the schedule against teams with similar make up. So right now she is getting 4-5 practices a week and tons of reps from a good coach which should help come the 1st travel tourney. It seems like once the girls get to HS the problem goes away as the travel coaches know that most kids will be on HS teams and off limits from mid Feb to mid may.

Very Good point!
When a kid plays school ball and travel ball and the coaching is there and they still do not improve.
Some players can make the teams but do not advance, maybe they have maxed out on their level. But the effort is there and the desire to play both is present, let them play both.
There are alot of good coaches out there but I do not think many of them would say not to play. Every program is different with pros and cons. You can spot the players who take the sport serious by the amount of improvement they display.

I pray that all girls play school ball. Some may feel it sets the girls back but at an early age, they should get the school experience of playing sports with thier school friends. Many that think it sets our girls back are the ones who have kids going to hitting coaches, pitching coaches and hitting the fields in of time with our over-devoted parents(I'm one of them).
-if they are good and love it,they wont decline in abilities
-shared time with school mates may sharpen people skills-she helps kids who never played?
-make friends with those you may have never met?
-sit out now-join highschool later may be frowned upon by varsity coach?
-what if travel team cuts her next year or moves her down in rotation?
-but all school programs are not the same. Our league is fortunate enough that it is loaded with elite travel players still playing schoolball from 7th to varsity.I coach school and travel.I make daily announcements on the school P.A. giving props-they love having thier names and stats announced! We like doing better than the baseball team.
-get the chance to play a position you don't in travel-enhance your abilities
-pray your school athletics isn't a joke
-kids need a break, school ball offers that without actually taking time off.If she is that good, she wont decline.Hate for my kid to burn out too early.
-you're only a kid once!

Denying a girl a chance to play school ball at the jr. high level only to better there team or organization is wrong and might impact the player when she gets to high school.

panther-tiger - thanks for making my kiddos middle ball experience awesome! Just have to realize that the level of competition is not good. But lots of great memories and fun times playing with her friends. Gotta love playing for your school. Summer ball is definitely better competition, more games if you are challenging yourself and playing at the highest level you can, but have your kids play school ball - jr. high too!
