Here is the batting order: Lindsey Kayleigh Lexy Ally

Team A Lindsey is called out on a strike 3 as the last out in inning 3.

Next inning for Team A Lindsey leads off(forgetting that she had struck out). She gets a double. Kayleigh bats and gets a single as Lindsey advances to 3rd. Lexy comes up to the plate takes a pitch as Kayleigh steals to 2nd. Team B calls time and says Lindsay batted illegally and was actually the last out of the previous inning. Lexy is at bat with a 1-0 count with Kayleigh on 2nd and Lindsay on 3rd.

What is the proper ruling?

Too late - Team B needed to appeal batting out of order before the first pitch to Kayleigh. Once that pitch was thrown, Lindsey's time at bat was legitimized and the next proper batter is the one that follows her in the order, Kayleigh.

Comment: "Lindsey Kayleigh Lexy Ally" is kind of a tongue-twister. It's not easy to say 3 times...

Yep, too late to appeal batting out of order. Play on, no penalty.

How about a little game of "what if".

What if...team B had brought this to the umpire's attention while Lindsey was at bat?

Answer: Replace Lindsey with the proper batter. The proper batter assumes any ball/strike count accumulated by Lindsey. No further penalty.

What if...team B appeals this after Lindsey completes her at bat, but before a pitch was thrown to the next batter?

Lindsey's time at bat is negated (just like it never happened and if she is on base she is removed). Any runners who advanced due to Lindsey becoming a batter runner are returned to their previous bases. Any bases stolen during the at bat can be kept. Any outs made against runners already on base are upheld. The batter who should have been batting is called out. The next batter is whoever follows the batter who should have batted and was called out.

I think I got everything there!

Bretman, what if the batter leading off the inning got out and the hitting team realized the wrong batter just got out? Can they have a "do over" with the correct batter or is the out recorded and carry on?

Dawgsdad: If the defense properly appeals...

- The at-bat that just occurred by the improper batter is cancelled.

- The batter who should have batted is out.

- The next batter is whoever follows the batter that was just called out for not batting in her proper spot.

- No do-over!

Is the team batting allowed to appeal themselves batting out of order (BOO)?

Other than putting the right batter at the plate before the wrong batter completes her at-bat, no.

How does it go in the scorebook? Catcher gets the put-out on the batter that should have batted? How does her out show in her offensive stats?
