Jr. High School Ball

I know I have seen this subject in the past. Could someone please explain the guidelines for Jr. High ball. Are the girls who are on a Jr High team allowed to practice with their select team while Jr. High ball is going on. Our school has a team but it is a club team not a school sponsored team. I have heard conflicting opinions on this. I had a coach/AD tell me his team is a school sponsored team and are not allowed to play with their select team until Jr High ball is over.
Just need some clarity.
Thanks

If your school's team is a club team then OHSAA regulations do not apply.

If your school's team is school sponsored then the following applies:

4) Non-Interscholastic Participation
  • 4.1) A member of an interscholastic fast pitch softball squad (any student who has played
in a scrimmage, preview or regular season/tournament game as a substitute or
starter) sponsored by the Board of Education shall not participate in a non-interscholastic
program (tryouts, practice or contest) as an individual or as a member of
a team in the sport of fast pitch softball during the school?s season (Bylaw 10-3-1).

I've only included the most relevant rule, check out the rest of them here:

I coach travel and 8th grade school ball. If you DD is on a non interscholastic team, the club team you mentioned that takes the place of a school sponsoed scholastic team then there are no rules that apply to your DD other than if she were in high school and wanted to join or the HS team wanted her to join she would have to discontinue practice with the non interscholastic team 30 days (I believe) before she could play on the scholastic team. But for your DD in middle school on a non-school sponsored club team and a travel team there are no rules. She can play and practice as much as she wants where ever she wants and when she wants.

Been through this with baseball and softball. Spoke with Dickerson at the state and the other threads are correct. If it is a Club team and not a sponsored school team - NO Rules apply.

Sad but most AD's and varsity coaches don't know the rules .

So apparently these are not really school teams? Such as 5th and 6th grade teams that play under the school name, but not sponsored?

Oh yeah, Hillbilly---and we thought we were behind because dd played slowpitch in elementary, and didn't start fastpitch until jr. high. ::)

More and more schools are opting to start right out with fastpitch and just forget about slowpitch.

I'll tell ya, the transition was a shocker, (that first season of fall ball was a real eye-opener----that's where we got our first taste of the differences). ?I remember hollering ?"Hey!!!---she can't run to first---she struck out!!!" LOL ;D

Ours is not a school (district) sponsored team YET. Some of them are. The goal for the Jr. Highs in our district is to show that intrest and support so that it will eventually be a district sposored team. As of now it is self funded. There at least 10 other schools in our area that have teams, a few are school teams but most are club teams.

IMHO, you're better off remaining a club team for Jr. High ball. No restrictions on how many games you can play, when you can practice, no restrictions of playing/practicing with travel team, etc. Most of all, no fear of screwing up eligibility if someone doesn't know/understand the rules.

I agree with cshilt... we have had jr. high and 4-5th grade spring ball for 5-6 years. ?One of our teams left us last year to be in a sanctioned league and regretted it. ?
It is also hard to get field time if the h.s. has a varsity, JV and 9th grade team. ?Our jr. high teams play 4 Fridays single games and 5 Sunday doubleheaders with a tournament that everyone has the opportunity to play in. ?We typically have over 70 Jr. high teams and 12-16 4-5th grade teams. ?Most schools have 2 teams in the league... all are "club teams" or "after school activity".

The Columbus catholic diocese middle schools has 4th thru 8th grade athletics (sokker starts in 1st grade). The athletics programs are supported strictly by volunteers and parent fees - pay to play - and are not board sanctioned. Even though not covered by OSHAA rules, most coaches and ADs at the participating schools do not allow a kid to play on a school team and a club team during the same season. Practices are another matter, so it's probably up to the individual coach. But since OSHAA sanctioning isn't the issue in this case, it's a personal matter between you and the coach/AD.

Do NOT get your jr high team sanctioned as an OHSAA team, definitely keep it as a club team. No advantages to being OHSAA at that level, only headaches. You can even get school funded transportation for your club team without any violations (if your school will furnish a bus...). I personally called OHSAA and asked about that, and yes, no problem. It is the same as any other "club".

I think it depends where you are as far as whether it is better to be club or scholastic. In my case, the MS where I coach is in the Ohio Capital Conference and they do all the scheduling of the games for the league, the school arranges for the buses, the AD makes sure we have a field and umpires, the umpires are paid by a check from the school and the school pays someone to line the fields. All I have to do is show up and coach. After coaching travel for 5 years and doing it all myself school ball is like a dream. The only scheduling I do is for the 2 scrimmages we are allowed plus the end of year tourney we are allowed to play. Even with those all I do is inform the AD by email what the schedule is and he arranges the buses and umpires. I know the OHSAA limits us to 17 games, 2 scrimmages and one end of season tourney but with practice mixed in I think the girls get all the softball they want and considering the pay to play is $90, I think that's a great deal.

Unfortunately the school we relocated to does not offer junior high softball like our previous school. Looks like the kid will be doing the track/field thing. I can't keep up with this kid ! :-X
