KEEPING YOUR SCHOOL ELIGIBILITY!!

My dd coach asked that she not participate with her travel team. Although she and I don't like it, we respect it. She knows she's in for a long season, and going against the coach would just make it worse.

I think this was touched upon by a seperate thread some time ago regarding OSHAA holding back our DD's in regards to softball.

If anyone bothers to read the OHSAA rules, you'd find them a bit contradictory and trying to get an answer from anyone at OSHAA is a crapshoot at best. Throw in all the misinformed parents, AD's and coaches and it is a wonder any girl in the state of Ohio is really eligible by everyone's interpretation of the rules.

In this case though, the rules seems to clear her for playing. Indoor softball is not considered a similar non-scholastic sport to school ball and she does not officially become a member of the team until she participates in a preview, scrimmage or game which is when she would fall under the OHSAA 'rules' and 'regulations'.

You never know what your DD will gain or lose in any tournament, practice, game or scrimmage, but I would be very 'concerned' if someone coaching my DD tried to limit her participation when that participation is absolutely 'legal'.

To clarify , I would not go directly against the coaches orders. I'm saying that if this scenario was such that the kid could play legally she should play. The original thread says the HS coach knows about the tourney and his concern was for eligibility, since the tourney is legally fine , she could play. His policy of letting girls play with their travel team before the season was not stated. I'm all for playing all you can. MD

aren't there rules about playing or practicing with a travel team during school ball? it may be more than if it is indoor or out door ball.?

David,
My AD contacted, and spoke with an Associate Commisioner, and here is what he had to say about girls playing with their travel teams, and when they have to quit practicing with them....

You will not get a specific date for this......these teams can continue to practice/play until your first scrimmage/preview/regular season game that the player becomes involved as a member of your team.

John Dickerson, OHSAA.......by telephone (2/29/08)

Just my opinion but if you asked the coach and he prefers you do not play....I would respect the HS coaches wish.......one tournament or two or three is not going to be worth the trouble you may have with the HS coaches. There are enough politics that go on in School sports why add to the fire.

Shane,

You got someone from OHSAA to personally talk with you? The water in Hoover Reservoir just split and my well water at my house just turned into wine. (Boone's Farm Stawberry Hill - nonetheless)

D. W. told us in a meeting several years ago that they would no longer answer any inquiries from the public.... I BOW to you. This John must be a more progressive member that actually believes in (gasp) communication! What a concept.

(disclaimer... any references to OHSAA in a sarcastic manner or any manner that may be constured as "sarcastic" or in any manner that may be considered disrespectful of the lords of OHSAA is not intended..... well, maybe not except for the members that were awarded a Lexus and a trip to Hawaii for their services)

I didn't make the call, my AD did. ;)

The people that say OHSAA doesn't recognize indoor softball as real softball crack me up. ?I always laugh every time I read it. ?If you are going to make statements, then make informed ones. ?Go to www.ohsaa.org to see that OHSAA says.......

4.7) Participation in indoor fast pitch softball is not a violation of OHSAA non-interscholastic team Bylaw 10-3-4 for student-athletes.

Bylaw 10-3-4 essentially sets the number of girls on a travel team from the same highschool and states that they are only allowed to participate on these teams before or after the highschool season

Go to OHSAA to read the full bylaw.

Bottom line is this....OHSAA DOES recognize indoor softball as REAL softball, but allows the whole highschool team to play on one team outside of the June 1st-July 31st window if it is indoor. ?It does NOT allow a girl to play indoor at the same time as she is playing HS ball, which begins as stated from the OHSAA official posted by Knights.

Even if not, why disrespect the highschool coach by ignoring their request or by telling them a lie?

If your dd is commited to playing for her school team do keep in mind as mentioned earlier - the injury factor.

A girl on my dd school team is probably out for the entire school season due to breaking her foot at her indoor game recently and was sitting on a bucket catching for my dd instead of dressed in full catchers equipment.

I?ve spoken with the HS coach. It?s not her request, recommendation or her wish, this is simply a matter of eligibility. Also we would never disrespect the coaches or the highschool.... that?s why we asked. Thanks forum for all your input!!!
