This will be my 10th year of travel ball and have a few thoughts if your still looking for girls.

1) If you have only 6-7 players at this point fold your team so the rest of the girls can find one. It is the right thing to do for the girls. Don't let your ego get in the way.
2) If you have 8-9 your ok really only looking for 1 or 2 girls to put minimum out there , and if the ego maniacs with 6 or 7 kids will fold there team will be plenty to go around.
3) OK bumping thread looking for players every 5 min this time of year will not do much.
4) But these will
a) Look at the players looking for team thread
b) Ask players about friends
c) Run add in local paper to get diamonds in the rough out of rec ball. They don't know about OFC

Just my thoughts

Im guilty of no. 3 sometimes...

Theres nothing more satisfying than finding the "diamond in the rough" and actually putting in some coaching time. One of the more gratifying things about coaching watching them succeed.
Theres a couple teams folding up right now and theyll be more before we get to spring. I try to keep a roster spot open specifically for the purpose of grabbing a wayward stud lol..

I agree, Good post.

It is amazing how many players are available this time of year... It always seems like they are a quality player that you already have though....:(

Excellent post. I'm embarrassed to say I read this post immediately after bumping my ad looking for an '03 player to complete my roster on Ohio Glory '03.
(Quasi hijack here. ;) )
Seriously......great post and oh so true.
Last year I happened upon two excellent players in January. One didn't even realize she was travel potential & now she's one of my 11U studs!

I would say...at the 18u level there are girls playing their first year in college that will probably decide to find a summer team they can jump onto late spring... But I agree if the team your on does not have at least 8 or 9 committed players at this point, and or do not have a pitcher that can be your definate #1 then it it would be time to have a serious talk about folding and moving on.

just a thought -- isn't a coaches job to develop girls? i would say, stop looking for a #1 pitcher, catcher, slapper, outfielder etc.... stop bumping your thread everyday all day and take a "coachable player" and develop her. Simple as that... (atleast 14u and under) i think if many teams would take this approach, there wouldn't be all these "looking for players" posts. you got the next 4-5 months to start coaching developing and training. There is no better feeling than seeing a girl who was average make huge plays and turn into a good or very good player under your coaching come summer time. :)

I love the coaches that call my players knowing that they have been with me for years...They must be OUT to get her...just saying...or really doing EXTREME things...just saying

every year players start moving around in late winter/early spring. some are not happy with coaching or amt of practice in off season or team committment to getting better in the off season, or dissappointment with tournament schedule.

Just an observation - as the kids get older the showcase type teams will be looking for committments from January through December. Because of the lead time required to enter the fall tournaments you really need to have your roster, and funds, in place before the normal August tryout time. A team may still fill in some gaps in the summer - but I would think the strong teams would be set and ready to go in the fall. I don't know about up north, but the fall down here is a huge recruiting season these days. As the sport continues to change I think you just might see the older teams getting rosters set for the year in late December and early January.

BTW - I am going to pose this thought as a question in the general section.
