Impressions:
Lady Pioneers - good hitting team, very solid 1-2 rotation on pitching. I believe can hang in there with most of 'elite' 10u teams...
Marion Diamonds Waddell: We (West Liberty Force) pulled out one heckuva game in bracket play to beat them 1-0. They are solid in all facets, and will win their share! Pitcher threw a heckuva game! Very easily could have won this tournament...
Ohio Hawks Anderson: This team has grown alot from the 1st time we played them in early May. 3rd baseman very good. I didn't see them throw anyone besides the big blonde girl, who was solid today...pulled out some clutch hits when we had them down late...
Miami Valley Express: Good team, beat us pretty well. Fundamentally good accross the board...will win their share and can compete with anyone IMO.
MC Flames: As their (faster) 2nd pitcher gains consistency, the wins will start adding up.

I would love to know how today would have turned out if the umpire knew the infield fly rule a little better. I really think that impacted our game. It took two runs off the board, when we lost by 1.

thank you for posting the rule, it says nothing about tagging up when the ball is not caught. it is a live ball and the runners can advance the batter is out

Truthfully, I was always under the same impression as you especially while it was happening. Then I thought well i guess i was wrong after the call. Now after scouring the internet I am leaning back the other way but thoroughly confused. Regardless, as a parent I still have to proud of the Pioneer '01 girls. They won two games convincingly after that one to win the tourney. As a fan of the game I would love to see a rematch with the Express somewhere down the road because you guys are solid. Honestly- great pitcher and does your middle infield ever miss a ball?

I am definitely not taking anything away from your girls, they played very well all weekend. I watched you play after us on Saturday, and you killed the ball. It is just disappointing when umpires have a huge impact on ANY game. That was one of the best 10u games I have ever seen, especially for a 4-5 matchup in bracket play. I guess we should have taken care of business in pool play so that we arent playing in the first round!LOL

Why don't one of you post the game situation when the infield fly rule came into play and if there remains a controversy someone will get out the bretman beacon.

Here is the game situation....MV Express had 1 out and runners on 1st and 2nd....ball is popped up and immediately umpire calls infield fly, batter out....the ball is not caught and runners advance...in some confusion the pioneers throw the ball around before tagging the runner that was advancing to 2nd, she is called out on the tag. It was a confusing moment for both runners and defense. It was a great game all around and both teams played tough!

Doesn't sound like umpire confusion (unless it couldn't be caught with reasonable effort), but offensive coaches and baserunners not knowing the rule. And likely defensive players and coaches not knowing.

Sounds like blue's made correct call, and 10u girls learned a hard lesson/rule...this happens at this level (10u), even though as a coach still drives me nuts when they get confused and all heck breaks loose!

So many parents and even coaches aren't sure on some of these less common occuring rule (how many truely understand the look back, etc?). I as a coach and have umpired in the past was mistaken this weekend on where the pitching distance was measured from...it happens!

I think part of the confusion about this rule is some believe it is a dead ball situation. To my knowledge, the call would be infield fly rule if fair ball, batter called out if this is so. There is no call of a dead ball in this case. Geez, I hope I'm right. lol

You are correct. Infield fly balls are live. When the ball hits the dirt, it is a natural reaction for the runners (and some base coaches) to want to advance.
Points to remember: batter is out (if fair), runners are in jeopardy if they advance but it is NOT a force out. Any play made on those advancing runners must be a tag play.
If the ball is caught, normal "pop fly" rules take precedence, meaning any runner must tag up before advancing.
If the infield fly ball falls foul, it is a normal foul ball & is dead.
If caught foul, it is a live ball falling under same "pop fly" rule mentioned above.
Sounds like that was a barn burner of a game!

That is not what the umpire ruled. He ruled the runner on first out for not tagging up, after the ball hit the dirt. The whole mess began because no infielder could catch the ball. It was hit behind the pitcher, and the second baseman and SS could not get to it. That was the poor judgement call. The bad interpretation came when the runner on first was called out. Both girls actually touched home before the any tags were made.
