Hi my daughter is new to travel ball and has a 03 birth date. I want to make sure we put her on the right team. Is there any teams I should definitely look into, and are their any teams I should stay away from. We have some tryouts we are going to but wanna make sure we go to the right ones. Thanks

depends on how far you are willing to travel and what level of competition you are looking for. Where are you located?

If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.... The best advice we were given is to stay away from coaches or organizations who make promises- playing time, tourney selection, etc. I'd also ask some of the parents at tryouts if they know or have played on the team you are trying out for or some of the other teams you are looking at. They may be able to give some help at the specific level your looking at... especially if there were negatives. Those are remembered long after the positive. Good luck!

Stay away from any team where the Coaches kid plays the same position as your daughter. :)

Not to drive you away from the OFC but here's another forum where this very question has been asked and answered numerous times:

Other than that, Welcome aboard!

No matter what team she goes too, Make sure she gets private hitting lessons, or if she's a pitcher, same thing. Look for the Coach that understands hitting/pitching techniques so he can correct her during her batting or pitching. See Gary Saunders from the M C Madness out of Brunswick at the Batting Cages off rt-303. Private message me for his #

This is the best advice you are going to get. I urge you to grab your daughter by the hand and both of you need to run away from this as quickly as you can before you ever get started. It will make you crazy. Both of you. ;)

He's right. It will make you, your DD, other family members and co-workers crazy as well (from listening to you!) That money you were going to use to finish your basement (or retire with) - kiss it good bye!! Your garden? Forget about it.

The good news is that the right softball team is like a new, extended family, good coaching helps build great character in our kids, there are endless photo ops and that resolve to not feed your family exclusively from the concession stand decreases significantly around the 3rd tourney - meaning less work for you. Best of luck!!

Do not feel pressured to accept a spot you are not comfortable with... There is a good match out there for your daughter... Avoid the high pressure sale pitch...

Right over here!
Fit is everything. Take a look at the polls and see where the top competitive teams are. Try and get to at least 4-5 tryouts and take a look around.

I have seen the grizzlies and the rally cats at the older age divisions 16u and they play some really good ball and seem to have a great time doing it too.

This is a difficult process and unfortunately does not always work out. There are some things you can do as listed above but none of them will ensure that you will end up in the best situation. The best advice is do your homework and do not get pressured into joining a team you are not comfortable with. As you can see from the tryout page currently standing at 634 tryouts starting this weekend through the entire month of August. Start looking into teams that you are interested in. Unfortunately you have missed the end of the current season. Watching teams play, watching how the coaching staff works, parents behave, players work together, etc is a great way to start making a list. Ask parents of travel players for input but understand you will only get their feeling on how it was with their daughter. In NEO you have lots of options. Organizations with a history are a good place to start but there are always differences between teams in the same organization. When you go to tryouts watch how they are done. A good team will have an organized tryout. How many girls are at the tryout? Teams with good reputations get a lot of girls at tryouts. If you daughter is at a tryout of 5 girls, probably not a good situation. Ask the coaches questions. What positions are they looking for, how many spots are they looking to fill, do they have pitching (you will see later on how many teams are looking for pitching), what types of tournaments will they play in, are they ok with your daughter playing other sports, do they travel alot. And after you go through the process, do what you feel is right for your daughter and hope for the best. Fortunately there are a lot of great organizations and teams out there, hope you find one that works for your DD.

I want to thank everyone for there input and private messages. We will definitely be changing up our tryout schedule. I just cant believe there are people out there that do that to families and children and get away with it. We will be staying away from Team 3n2. Someone needs to start a post warning other new families about that guy. That is unreal. Thanks again

Also watch how the parents interact with each other, if the parents don't get along it can make for a long summer.
