DD has been offered a position on a team after trying out, however, we would like to go to several other tryouts to give her more opportunities, the team that offered her a spot has given us a contract with 72 hours to decide, if we decide yes then find a better opportunity are we held to that contract?

Interesting. Most organizations have their tryout in August. I don't think anyone here could give you any guidance without seeing the contract.

What age group?

Some clubs require and answer in 24hours. If that is a top rated club, and where she wants to play pitch your tent there, if not keep shopping no reason to play with a club she don't like. Usually there is no contract to sign right away but she would burn her bridge with the club in the future.

Unless it is is a team she has her heart set on playing with, I wouldn't sign anything and I would take her to as many try-outs as I could. It is only her 1st one and there will be many more in the next few weeks. Don't sell yourself short by jumping on the 1st team that offers. See who has the best offer for her. I say shop around a little.

If your happy commit if not don't, but don't lead them on not fair to them or other girls that might want to be there. Just be honest. Sometimes a bird in the hand is better then 2 in the bush.

What would bother me is if you say yes.....then decide to leave you may have taken a spot from a girl who really wanted to play for that team.

And besides.....if you already said yes why would you continue to go to try outs ?

It sounds like you know what to do, take your chances and try to find the right fit, you will know it.

From a coach's view, if you came to my try out you are saying I want to be on this team, if you like what you saw out of the players and coaches then commit, if not be honest and say no thanks and go to another try out. As a coach if I offer a spot and you came to my try out then I would expect you to commit, why else would you have tried out for me? if you want to shop around I understand, then I go to the next girl on my list untill all spots are filled. You may not get the chance again so pick smart and find a good fit, do your homework on teams trying out for. Good luck to all this try out season

OK, how about this scenario...

You are a small business owner. You offer a job to someone to be your office manager. They accept. Dismiss other applicants. Scheduled to start next week. You then find out that after they accepted your job they continued to go on job interviews. What does this say about the person you just hired?

Be very careful. If you accept roster spot, then continue to go to different try-outs, coach will most likely hear about it. Trust and commitment issues will come up. Not the way you want to start with a new team. Be honest. If you want to continue to go to try-outs to see and experience different teams, then let coach know this now. Would NOT suggest commiting then backing out. Not a good precident. Other teams will find out in the future. Not what we want to teach dd's.

Yes but what happens to your office managers job when the owner keeps interviewing and he finds someone else and now you are the mail girl! I see your point though! Let the team know your intentions up front! As a coach, how would you take it when you offer a position and they say they want to keep their options open and will be trying out with more teams?

time limits... heard about them... thanks to those that use them. I ended up with 4 great players that were given drop dead time limits... keep up the good work!

Get real!

I take it as an indication that we may not be the team they were looking for. Have read may, may times on this forum, "You will just know". If they need to see what else is out there, I genuinely wish the girls and family the best. Afterall, it is about them and finding that 'just right' fit where they can learn, grow, and be happy. I appreciate their honesty. Player may come back after the next round of try-outs and say this is def team for me, or go somewhere else, creating an opportunity for another girl. All things happen for a reason!

As for the owner continuing to interview for a position already filled, well, not sure I would want to work for that person after all. Not how you treat your people :)

Being in Sales, I dont think I've ever committed to an employer on the first offer, thus called negotiations!! I dont understand why any organization would demand a response in 72 hours in July? I thought if we were in demand, our job is to let the employer know we will be entertaining other offers so we get the most bang for our buck? Maybe I'm wrong, but seriously JULY?

New to travel ball then I would certainly go to more tryouts if you are not quite sure about the first one. Be upfront with coach, let him know this is all new and you need some time and want to experience other tryouts as well. If it is meant to be then the position will still be there after looking at others. I dont believe in strong arming players with a 72 hour limit. It is supposed to be about the child, right?

72 hours for a decision is reasonable. The fact that the tryout was held in July would make me a little suspect. Sometimes teams/organizations will try to get a jump on the available talent pool.

When dd first tried out, we went to five try-outs with five offers and accepted on the fifth offer. There is nothing wrong with just saying, "We're interested; however, we would like to explore all possible opportunities. We understand you must do what's best for the team. We want to do the same for our daughter."
