What to say to another travel coach when he attends your tryout

I was taken back when the coach from another travel team stopped by our tryouts. I thought that was strange but worried that if any of his players were there in attendance, they would be in a very bad spot. Is this acceptable practice and what would you say to the coach ? It is school property and I guess anyone has the right to attend. It took me back and I was not very inviting.

The only reason that I could think of, other than the obvious "recruiting" or "spying" angles, would be - possibly - that he wasn't comfortable with how he conducted his own tryouts, and was looking for other ideas. Possibly. ... doubtful.

Probably a coach with a fragile ego. I wouldn't worry about it too much. All coaches should remember, that it is a year to year commitment, and this is the time of year when all players get to go shopping.

Definitely does not seem appropriate, and could have definitely put some players and parents on the spot. If I was a new coach and wanted to get an idea how teams ran tryouts, I would have asked "permission" to do this beforehand. Would be very wrong in my mind to attend, and then approach any players or parents about his travel team.

He should at least have the decency to hide in the bushes. While wearing Groucho Marx glasses.

There are many possible reasons for the coach of another travel team attends your tryouts:

1. Looking to see if any of his players are there.
2. Watching how you conduct your tryout.
3. He's thinking about defecting.
4. He's trying to poach players.
5. He was bored and lived close to the fields.
6. He forgot which team he coaches.
7. He was marketing his own tryout.
8. Comparing your players to his.
....and on and on.

Did you confront him and ask? "Hey coach "so-and-so", what brings you to my tryout?"

Thanks for the replies. I did not have a match but that was funny.
I did ask him why he was there and he said he was on public property and I mentioned it was not right but decided that I needed to wear my big boy pants and walked away. I should have ignored it and just ran our tryout but it just hit a nerve.
Len: all good possible ideas.

This was me last night. I'm not coaching this year, but some people can't get enough softball.

Ugh ... when he said he was on public property, you did really good to walk away ... and it definitely rules out most of the good reasons for him to be there ...

Pat I if you gave me one guess I could probably name that tool. But I won't do it here. LOL

Personally I would have been excited to have some other coach come to my tryouts or practice...means we are doing something right. And I would have used it to my advantage by introducing the coach and asking him/her in front of all the players and parents "What brings you out to our tryouts today?" They quite possibly could have sank their own ship, or made you and your team look like a real winner!!! A Win-Win in my mind!!!

Excellent!

Have you ever considered selling used cars?

Just approach him and say "Hey coach, blah organization, right? Can't I help you?" and go from there? Assume innocence and go from there instead of the other way.

Ah well there you go then. That implies "not innocent". Good job on letting it go.

How about using him as the warmup point to jog around? "OK girls let's do a small jog to warmup, go around COACH SOANDSO FROM BLAH ORGANIZATION and back to me! GO!"
