NSA Rule clarrification

I have a girl that would like to play for us at 18's for our first NSA tournament, which will be our only one. After she plays for us, she wants to go play 16 & Under for another team in NSA. We won't be doing any NSA tournaments at 18 & Under after our first. We are just doing it because its local.

Can you she do this is we sign her release.

I am unsure and our local director is hard to get a hold of.

Thanks in advance.

Yep! Went thru this in May of `07 when our DD played in a NSA tournament in Cortland (with a different team). Then we had her released the week after back to her regular team. They were good about helping us out and working with us back then.

There's a thread on the PA (tri-state) site from 2007 when there apparently was a rule change about not being able to play down, though it may matter if she is making a permanent roster change (one per player per season). I would definitely clarify this with the local director, though I know that's not easy, if he's the one who will get the paperwork.

Technically, she could not drop in age group during the season. Now in Ohio, as we all know, stranger things have happened...........

I apoligize for not thinking of the two different age difference. In our case (back then) both teams was 10u. Sorry

I don't think this is allowed as once she plays 18's she can't come back to 16's. The same thing also applies between A and B. If she played 16A then she could not go back to a 16B team.

Does it matter if Sidney's team takes a berth or not?? If they are just playing in the tournament because it's close and not to get a berth, should the girl be affected? I always wondered that and thought this might be the right thread to find out.

Qualifying or not should have nothing to do with it. If you are required to use your official roster (the online one the NSA makes everyone use), then she is stuck.

She can be granted a release one time from the team to pursue another, but the team has to be non-qualified and of the same age group.

NSA doesn't make a distinction between playing just to play or playing to obtain a berth. Some NSA tournaments use a paper roster and are non-qualifiers. In those, all NSA rules apply EXCEPT for roster restrictions on teams.

Sorry for sticking my nose in, but those are what the roster rules have been for fast-pitch for a few seasons now and I know you get no hlep from anyone with the NSA on here.

So basically the question to Sidney is: Is this tourney a qualifier? If not, she should be fine, if so don't risk her status with her regular team.

Is the NSA of Western PA state championship, thus its a qualifier, thanks to everyone for their feedback.

If as you say you are playing in only one 18U tournament, then you must be a 16U team playing up. In that case, as long as you are registered as an 16U team and playing up at 18U, it should be okay. Look at the Slammers, they played in a lot of 16U and 18U tournaments, but they were only registered as a 14U team.

Sidney's team is 18u. The girl that is playing with them for the one tourney is on a 16u team. She is just helping him out for one tourney.

The way I understand the rule: a 16u player can play up on an 18u roster and then be released to participate on a 16u team (as long as she is age appropriate for that division). That is her one release. The issue will be: if the 18u team qualify's, the roster is frozen and at that point, she will not be able to move down a division or class.

balla, according to the Western PA director (who, whatever one can say about his manners, I think knows the rules, at least as they are in PA), there was a new NSA rule last year that said, if a team qualified when playing up, they could no longer play - or maybe it was qualify - in the younger age bracket.

Whatever it is, there are NSA rules about playing up for players and teams. (And there are for ASA, too, at least as far as it goes for being released and playing at nationals.)

What it boils down to, is the poster needs to get an official opinion, or evaluate all the guidelines and decide.
