I'm an Rn at a busy inner city hospital and worked 7p-7:30a for 11 yrs. Switched to days 9yrs ago and never looked back, lol.
I've read/heard that working night shift messes with your circadian rhythms so badly that it literally takes years off your life---and I absolutely believe it. I had to paint the walls of my bedroom a dark forest green and matching mini-blinds for the windows---my sisters called it the "Bat Cave", lol.
People who have never worked the night shift have no idea. You get home at 8am and get to bed at about 9:30 after getting the kids some breakfast---try to sleep with the neighbor's lawn mower going outside your window, phone ringing with sales calls (or even your own family who
knows you worked the night before).
Then, just as you hit your REM sleep (about noon), your kids come into the bedroom---"Mom, haven't you slept enough, yet? Are you gonna get up?"---which I could handle if I didn't have to go back into work that evening, lol.
I was seriously sleep-deprived for years. I often felt like I had a hangover (and I don't even drink), and sometimes my hands would actually shake.
Switching to days literally saved my life. I always thought working nights was better for my kids (believed they wouldn't even hardly know I was gone). Later found out my kids preferred to have me home at night, anyway, lol.
