OHSAA - Indoor Ball Rule Change

I was out at the OHSAA looking up the exact wording on a rule and ran across this:

[BACKGROUND="black"]Change in Indoor Softball Regulations[/BACKGROUND]
July 24 - The OHSAA has revised the sport regulation regarding indoor softball and baseball to reflect that members of the same school team are no longer permitted to participate on the same non-interscholastic indoor softball or baseball team in excess of the four player limitation (50-percent rule), with the exception of from November 1 to February 1 during the school year.
Removes some of that gray area some coaches like to play in....

We haven't done indoor in over 3 years with our dd school... but it looks like they could from 11/1 through 2/1 if they chose to.

Yep - Only 93 days to play indoor ball with more than 4 players from the same high school team.

Thanks Bear....I was trying to figure out why Allstars was changing their dates! That makes sense. So as long as we don't have more than 4 kids from the same HS team then we can play indoor anytime and if we have more than 4 then we can only play from Nov to February.

People always make the mistake of saying that OHSAA doesn't recognize it. That is not true, they have ALWAYS recognized it as softball/baseball; but there was an exception granted. They have now refined that exception to exist only for a certain time frame.

The question I would ask, why the Feb 1st date? Most of the leagues we have played in ran until a week or less before pitchers and catchers reported for the HS season. Was there any reason given for the arbitrary date of Feb 1st? So, for 2010 when the P&C can report on 2/22 our beloved OSHAA has knocked out three weeks of time for playing 6 on 6 together. The obvious move is to mix players with the opposing team for those last three weekends in Feb.

7th grade thru 12th grade. So, in your question, Both Varsity and JV.

Only 7th & 8th Graders if the Middle School has a sanctioned softball team. Most Ohio schools do not have sanctioned teams so those girls would be "off the hook."

During June 1 to July 31 not a problem as long as the HS coach isn't involved.

I started the 1st Ohio indoor Fastpitch league in 1986. In a meeting with OHSAA officals I was told that they did not recognize indoor as a sport as long as some changes to the H.S. rules were in place. The GCGC 6 on 6 league played each Sunday from 1986 till 2007 in a facility 10 minutes from OHSAA headquarters.

You must be talking about Sportsite. My men's slowpitch team played in tournaments there from the time it opened through the early 1990's. Many fond memories!

We played at Sportsite from 1989 until 2007. The league played at the Cross Creek ****** complex on Schrock Rd. prior to that.I believe that Sportsite was a tennis facility until 1989.I agree about the fond memories. Besides all the great games and players over the years the 1st and only ASA Indoor Championship was held in 1992. The local ASA comm. approved the tournament. When ASA national hq. learned of it they ko'd the tournament the following year.

Greyy,

Maybe in 1986 their terminology was "they didn't recognize it", I don't have rules from 1986. Currently indoor IS recognized as softball, which is why they have a specific exemption....

4.7) Participation in indoor fast pitch softball is not a violation of OHSAA non-interscholastic
team Bylaw 10-3-4 for student-athletes.

Thanks for your long standing contribution to softball......

It will be interesting to see how OHSAA re-words rule 4.7 to take into consideration their new 50% for indoor softball.

Have to think that since the 50% rule is being implemented that indoor fast pitch will recognized by OHSAA.

Okay, I am new to all this information and I feel as though there is so much for any one person to trully comprehend!

Let's start at the beginning...
As long as the highschool coaches including the assist. varsity coach doesn't coach the team you could have more than 50% from the same high school??

And indoor??? I'm glad my dd's are still young so I have time to figure out all this before it affects my coaching them on select (should I ever) and at the high school!

Here is the link to OHSAA softball page. http://www.ohsaa.org/sports/sb/girls/default.asp
On the left side of the page is two links to softball and general regulations. Good luck.
