I was sitting in the bleachers at my son's wrestling match, and struck up a conversation with this older gentleman, he was amazed that wrestling is still the only sport that is the same as it was 50 years ago, I asked him to explain what he was talking about. He told me that wrestling was the only sport that modern technology has not changed. He said that just the equipment has changed many sports into something totally different from what he remembers.

he said that his school didn't even have girls sports. he said that baseball and football are completely different games, just because of the modern tech.

we even discussed basketball, I brought up that I didn't think that its changed, he brought up that everyone wore chuck converse high tops, the old flat bottom, canvas, pain in the butt to get on and off shoes. He said that the teams uniform budget was less than a pair of nike's that the kids are waring now.

we had a good discussion about who the better athletes are, old school or new school

just wondering what some of you-all think

Technology in training aides and training philosophy has advanced wrestling in the past 50 years. The technology just isn't as evident during a match because a grappler doesn't have much besides headgear and shoes. That is one of the greatest things about a wrestling match...there's no tools or teammates, just 2 people trying to out muscle, out technique, and out gut each other.

My secretary's son is a sophomore heavyweight for Amherst Steele HS. I've watched moms iphone videos of his matches and I am astounded at the speed and sheer strength of these "kids". I watch in amazement when he lifted and slammed an opponent 250 lbs to the mat. Damn. I'm glad I'm not out there!!!

That's a tough one. We all can say with today's technology that today's athlete are worlds above the older athletes. I think it would come down to the sport in general. Of course I'm more old school and would state that Jim Brown was the greatest running back ever. It took him eight years to do what he did. HOWEVER, the same can be made of Barry Sanders who nearly carried the same yard per carry as Jim Brown. The only reason he rushed for more was because he had more games in a season. Two different eras, same results when it comes down to the averages.

So I think you'll need to break it down by per whatever to state your claims. As for toughness, hands down-old school rules
