We have run into this a couple of times, where other teams come to our tryouts and try to recruit the players trying out to their teams. Am I missing the boat or is this a bush league happening?

Just find out where they are having tryouts and set up booths in the parking lots with contracts. Sign as many as you can with a big smile on your face.

I had a coach actually bring his DD to my tryout, and we made them an offer only to find the next morning, that he was named as a head coach for another organization. Either that was the offer he was looking for, or he was fishing.

This is not surprising. Some may want to have their DD experience different tryouts or have their kid seen if something does not work out and they need options later, whatever. Not everything is a conspiracy. Things are so fluid this time of the year, you'd hate to put all your eggs in one basket and limit your options for your kid.

But when they hand out fliers and business cards at your tryouts I call conspiracy.......

As a parent, would you want to be involved with an organization that sniped players at another team's tryout?

If a coach is upfront about what their intensions are I do not think most have a problem with them or their players trying out as long as that is why they are there. (It seems to be happening a lot more). But, for a coach to just show up at other teams tryouts to look at players and hand out cards that is bush league. Most parents have enough common sence to know these people are there because they cannot have tryouts on their own or they do not know what they are doing.
The people who do this without contacting the host tryout coaches show up for a couple of reasons.
1. They do not have the knowhow or support / equipment to run a tryout.
2. They do not have the money to rent field time or a place willing to let them use it.
3. They are not sure if their current team will stay together so they take their DD to others. (A lot of the time these coaches do this "without informing" the rest of their team)...
4. Its an easy way out with not a lot of effort needed to generate players (just go where they will be).

An example of a coach doing it rite: I had a coach a few years back that contacted me because they lost five players at the end of the year and wanted to know if he could bring his six that was left to the tryout. He wanted to find a home for all six.
There was only three that I made an offer too. Two accepted and the other lady that was the coaches DD went with the other 3 to another organization because he felt it was his duty to find a home for the other three. (I ended up picking his DD up at 23U).

On a side note, I would not want any player/parent that would give the time of day to another team while at our tryouts...

Things this time of year are absolutely fluid.

What was true today may not be true tomorrow.

I think most parents don't even understand what's going on. They are probably consumed with finding a good team for their kid.

This year, during regular season in May, there were "rumors" that kids were being recruited for this fall. I made sure I never spoke to another team or did it very little.

To me, if that player, be it during season or at tryouts is looking at other teams; let them...it's a free country. But, it's probably in poor taste for the opposing org, but some people do have poor manners!

I was never shy about walking right up to them asking them to leave. If that doesn't work, you can always make an announcement that evidently OrganizationX thinks that you have better teams and tryouts than they do because they've sent representatives to yours....
