Sorry Musty, I was going by on memory and at my age, I am learning that's not as reliable as it used to be. But I am interested in finding out how other states fund education. There has to be a logical, coherent plan somewhere.

We paid $150, up $50 from last year. That's also on top of tuition and I also pay my property taxes on top of that. Those are all my choices, so no whining. I do think the school situation is going nuts.

In Michigan, they are trying to pass a law that a public entity in fiscal emergency would be taken over by the state by with an appointed manager to run it. A public entity could be a school district, a village, a city, etc. That manager will have the authority to remove any elected officials, break any contracts, fire any employees it deems necessary to "right the "ship".

Here in Ohio, I see the politician letting it implode completely as far as schools are concerned. By letting that happen, they can point the finger at everyone but themselves. It frees them from their obligations as an entity and they can rename the district and start it all over again. I wouldn't expect anyone to step up with a solution. Many are in too deep to be able to get out. And the taxpayer still takes it on the chin.

Just saying...

Just curious, would the folks that have been doing the pay-to-play respond to this question, do you have more of the parents attitude that "if I'm paying this much for my kid to play, that they better be given more play time?" And if that is the case, and that's how the coach's have to handle this situation, does it become that the coach has to cut players so that he/she can give the kids enough play time. There's been talk about our school going that route, and I'm wondering if this becomes more of a headache for a coach if this is the mentality of the parents especially if you have too many on your team...

No, and they're very careful on their wording. Here everyone is calling it "pay to play", however if you ask anyone in the school system it's actually "pay to participate". If you actually talk to someone about it that's involved in the schools and you say pay to play, they will be quick to correct you to pay to participate.

Agreed, they make sure to call it "pay-to-participate" to nip that arguement in the bud. I've found that in our district (Midview), they take everyone who tries out for the teams because more players, regardless of skill, equals more money. Our cost is $550 for 1st sport, $100 for second. Our JV team has 15 players on it, and they pay the same as varsity. I will add that our softball program does a large fundraiser that offsets a good chunk of the cost, based on participation in the fundraiser. The sad part is that my DD played basketball this year and they didn't do squat for fundraising, so I got to foot the full $550 for that!

I only wish what you said was true. What I saw locally here is that most of the cuts were in academics. But in my town, the cuts were so severe that they had no choice. Biggest issue is how Ohio funds schools. When I was in Texas, they had very little funding issues and yes the schools that I was in were very comparable to Ohio. Now that the state has fallen on hard times, big time cuts to many schools. We will pay 500.00 per sport. Ouch! But after the parent meeting I just attended, the school cuts are even tougher. Every school has their own story to tell but it will be a tough time here in Pickerington. Glad the kids can still play sports - it is a big part of their high school experience.

Times are surely tough, but the plus side is that you seem to have terrific facilities there. My DD played a tourney there last summer and we were really impressed with them!
