Has any school tried not providing transportation to events as a way to decrease the costs? ie Make the parents of the players get them to and from the away games. Guessing it is some sort of LAME liability thing, but thought I would ask.

I know alot of people don't care for their school softball programs, (coaches and such) but I for one have amazing memories of my D.D. playing softball at Pickerington Central and watching the girls at North, which D.D. played travel ball with. We have great coaches, and Pete Laihr at central is an awesome A.D. I remember when D.D. was a sophmore, she went with the varsity team to go to the final four. WOW, it was amazing. She didn't play, but still we loved every moment. We lined S.T. 256 with signs encouraging the girls on. From the high school to the highway, which is at least a mile. All the parents and fans meet at the local post office on 256 to root the girls on as the bus passed by going to the final four game. This is what you wont get in Club Ball! O.K. I'am rambling now. Just hate to think the girls coming up won't get to enjoy these experiences!

It will be only a matter of time when these Schools in Ohio will end up in a Civil Lawsuit. Of course this only really affects Ohio Property Owner's as they are the only one's that are Taxed to fund the Ohio Schools.

That's a little simplistic - renters pay property taxes indirectly via the rent.

Civil suit for what? Because taxpayers refuse to pay for someone else's kids to play sports?

The ACLU has been hassling schools out here about pay for play because extracurricular activities and athletics were ruled to be covered by the state's "free school guarantee" in 1979. They're even checking schools' web sites to identify the ones that are doing it.

The California Supreme Court ruled in 1984 that a waiver process based on financial need or inability to pay does not make an otherwise impermissible fee permissible. Transportation fees were ruled permissable in 1992 by the Court because transportation is not an educational activity and the law contains a waiver provision for indigent students.

The whole thing is crazy. On one hand they rule you can charge for certain optional activities that are clearly educational in nature (e.g. field trips) and on the other hand they rule you can't charge for athletics which are optional and a non-scholastic activity.

San Diego Unified has a complete history of how this evolved along with a list of permissable fees on their website (http://www.sandi.net/217920124111647750/site/default.asp).

Add to that the opportunity to play for your school and community, pride of a team, rather than it thexperience being "all about you." that is the difference I find between travel and high school ball now. Many of the girls involved in travel, at least at the older levels, are worried about who is watching..ie..college coaches, and their own agenda rather than winning as a team for a community. Just think this is a wonderful lesson that would be lost if HS sports move to club activities.

There was a post about palacial schools..what about the expensive monuments to sports?? In the past 5 years our school has multimillion dollar monuments to both basketball and football.

Last year our HS baseball team went to state. They ended up state runners up for our division. Lost 1-0. Tough loss. But, we all went out to the town circle and cheered the bus coming home for the game they won and the one they lost. It really was heart warming to see the community come together like that. A lot of school pride!! I wouldn't want my dd not to play high school ball. I'm really glad she does. :)

SoCal -- How are the Calif. schools funded?

Lawsuits forced California to overhaul its school funding back in the 70s from local property taxes to a combination of property taxes and state funding. The original concept was the state establishes an amount of general purpose funding per student and fills in any shortage that is not covered by property taxes. The State and Fed also pay for categorical programs which constitute about a 1/3 of a school district's budget.

An average breakdown of school district revenue is 10% Federal, 60% State, 23% Property, 2% State Lottery and 6% miscellaneous local revenue.

Pay per play is inevitable with the changing times.Wouldn't want my kid to miss the opportunity to have the memories of playing a school sport with her friends at school-builds memories.

My problem is the set fee.$500 per sport in our town. Many kids do transfer and move into the district for sports such as football and basketball with the plans for future's going Big Time.Think it shouldn't be a set number for all sports?Costs to put on a program DO fluctuate!Does fielding a football team cost more than a cross country team for example?Should be broken down to percentages of total costs divided by players? If it costs the school $200 for a kid to play 1 sport and $1100 for a kid to play another sport, does it seem fair for the lesser to make up the difference?

Break the fees down by sport makes sense to me.

Parma's final pay to play numbers are $200.00 per player, this is good news compared to the original estimate of $915.00 per player. We will be fielding a Varsity and JV team, I am not sure about the other two High Schools in Parma.

Here is a link to an article about why they change the fee
http://blog.cleveland.com/parmasunpost/2011/03/parma_school_board_hopes_to_en.html

What happens to all that money everyone had already fundraised to cover the almost $1000 fee to play, now that it is only $200

SoCal -- Thanks. Here in Ohio, the state school funding formula was declared unconstitutional, and the legislature was charged by the judges to change the way our schools are funded. But that was only about 10 years ago, and the legislature, mostly controlled by the GOP in the intervening years has done absolutely nothing.

Majer - will have to come to you for counselling when my kids leave. They have been such a big part of my life for the last several years, that empty nest thing must be a shock to the system.

You should be a politician or maybe you are I don't know. haha. It was a Supreme Court ruling (1997) and since the ruling the Ohio General Assembly has enacted several pieces of legislation aimed at correcting problems identified by the court. In 2003 the Supreme Court refused to hear the case again.

Regardless how they are funded it is still OUR (taxpayer) money and many taxpayers don't want to be taxed more for schools. SO instead of looking for more money, districts are looking at how they spend the money they do get and there isn't enough to foot the bill for sports without hurting academics. Don't blame elected officials who are doing what the people they work for want. And I'm not saying you are, I'm talking in general.

I only wish what you said was true. What I saw locally here is that most of the cuts were in academics. But in my town, the cuts were so severe that they had no choice. Biggest issue is how Ohio funds schools. When I was in Texas, they had very little funding issues and yes the schools that I was in were very comparable to Ohio. Now that the state has fallen on hard times, big time cuts to many schools. We will pay 500.00 per sport. Ouch! But after the parent meeting I just attended, the school cuts are even tougher. Every school has their own story to tell but it will be a tough time here in Pickerington. Glad the kids can still play sports - it is a big part of their high school experience.

Don't come to me. That empty nest thing has kicked my butt, big time. They are 25 and 23 now and I still wander the house wondering how it could have passed so quickly. Enjoy every minute you have with them right now.

When were you in Texas and what do they do differently? Before the recession Ohio didn't have the funding issues they do today. In our school district funding wasn't an issue until the last two years and pay to play started last year.
