Posting scores

I thought i would start this thread because it seems important to some that they know the actual scores from tournaments.

This is my opinion on this and it is only an opinion.

I felt that the only thing to post when it comes to tournament results is the wins or loses. Weather you win or lose by 1 or 100 the only thing that matters is you won or lost. I myself have been involved in both sides of lopsided games. If we have a run rule lead I back off on stealing. If my team gets ahead by more than than run rule. then I will manufacture outs to get out of the inning. Why should my team drive up the score on another. It does nothing to help either team.

Now when I run a tournament I set it up where the runs for is the last in line for tie breaking for seeding in the Championship play. My tie breakers are as follows

Score (win=2, tie=1 and lose=0
Head to Head
Runs against
Runs for
Coin flip

I think doing it this way, your defense is what helps you for seeding.

So far no coaches plat had teams at my tournament has complained about me not posting actual scores. If I do get complaints then I will rethink my posting of scores.

I agree with running the tourney that way 100% . But I'm able to learn at least a little something by watching a teams scores over the weekend.

one thing I do locally in the middle school games is just post team A over Team by run rule ( sounds alot better than 12-0 or 21-2) . But there is much to be learned by scores.

Last fall we went 2-3 (I think) in a fall tourney --doesn't sound very good but the scores of the loses were 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2. lost 3 games by 3 runs total, there is info in those scores as compare to losing 3 games by 15-20 runs. IMO post em' MD

It can still be an advantage in the way you have set up because the runs against are still a way that a team can offensively give themselves a better chance in the case of a tie breaker. Now if you limit the number of runs against/runs for on a run rule to only include say 9 more runs than the losing team's score per game, then it might take the incentive of running up the score away.

Post'em... they do it at every level whether it's high school sports, collegiate, professional, etc. Part of the games we play. It's up to the coaches/organizations to play with sportsmanship, class, and tact. Not every game is capable of controlling a landslide.

MD is right about the learning from scores...

It is just a score. The kids, in my experience, really don't dwell on the score. Whether you post the scores or not, the players, parents and coaches are aware of what happened.

I agree with the others who say that people can learn something from the scores. For example, the coaches who vote for the top 10 teams can learn by comparing scores against teams that they know. Losing to the Slammers 3-2 tells other coaches that that is a tough opponent. Just giving a win/loss result doesn't convey nearly as much.

We played a basket ball game with no baskets - just back boards. Everyone left after the game with a warm & fuzzy feeling because NOBODY WON & NOBODY LOST. it was a great feeling - we all went out and got ice cream together too

Lets not lose site of the fact that this is TRAVEL BALL folks!! The scores should not be something that we have to hide from the public. If teams decide to play travel ball that don't belong there then the scores will reflect that. If teams work hard all season long and they know how to play the game then scores will reflect that to. Like ManitouDan said scores can tell you alot about the teams involved. If my DD's team has played team A and they lost to team B by 1 or 2 runs then that may tell me a littel something about the two teams.
Of course the main point here really is that this is not Rec ball or T-Ball where there is a need to hide the score. The only reason I can think of doing this is to not embarass a team that might just stink. Don't forget this sport (with the aid of this site) has turned into a place that people turn to see how some teams or organizations fare against other teams. If a team is constantly getting pounded and run ruled every game then maybe parents will avoid those tryouts next Fall. On the other hand if they consistantly see a teams name or teams from a particular organization on the winning end of those scores then maybe they will make it a point to attend those tryouts in the Fall.
Bottom line IMHO hiding scores is fine in Rec ball and T-Ball and no place for it in Travel ball. This is meant to be competitive. Let the results speak for themselves.

POST THE SCORES
Come to think of it, blow outs can be very deceiving.
team A vs. team B
first 5 innings it is a 2-1 ball game, team A's defense falls flat on their face (Key player got hurt) Team b ends up run ruling team A. Time limit stops the game
now i post the scores
Team A 1
Team B 12

Does that score give you an accurate description of the game.

NO according to the posted score, Team A ****s

Urbana Fan,

I agree with you on your tiebreakers and I agree with posting results only.

My point on not posting scores is not from a point of embarrassing anyone. What I see is important about the event is whether or not the teams that played there and their families enjoyed the event. Someone who wasn't there doesn't enter into my thought process.

Now, if teams that played at the event want to enter their scores, then that's fine. I've always had a lot to do once the day's play is over and getting those things done to be ready for the next day always have trumped posting scores. Having the teams post scores/results is therefore good.

For those TDs and organizations that do report scores, more power to them. They must be better organized or have a deeper interest in scores than I do or have someone just dedicated to that task.

If I was younger, I might feel differently but time has mellowed me to realize that it isn't the scores that matter, but more what the players learn about team work, sportsmanship, and learning how to deal with losing and winning graciously.

one score can mislead, two scores can mislead (less chance of this ) a whole weekend can be a mess ( bigger problems than one missing player and your D better not "fall flat" more than a once weekend ) thats not falling flat --that means the team is weak !

Urb fan I admire you for trying to be considerate of others --THATS IS PRIME COMMANDMENT # 2 but posting scores on the net is not going to hurt the kids feelings. Occasionally it causes "PCS" (Puffy Chest Syndrome) by parents but the kids are not worried about it. Maybe we might have to agree to disagree on this one small point --really it's not that big a deal. take care and I'd guess you better grow some thick skin --don't think many are going to agree with you on this matter. I think we can agree to disagree.

I normally would not have requested scores not be posted. But this tournament was Very early in the year, for most of the teams, this was their first tournament of the softball season. Now for SummerSlam3 July 24-26, 2009 a 5gg double elimination 1hr Min time limits only $400 entry fee (a shameless plug for my tournament) I don't care if the scores get posted. I my self won't have time to do it until Monday the 27th. So people can post away.

I had no Idea that some people would get so bent because scores are not posted.

So If any of you want to post scores from the SpringFling1 tournament, feel free to do so.

if we get blown out... part of the game and for some reason we may have deserved it. Now blown out is relative, 25-1 is concerning, but 8,9,10 to 2 or 1, hmm... might have been a great day for one and bad day for the other. It will cause us to work harder and smarter and probably use some techniques they used on us!!! True competition. Then, next time we meet it could be a different scenario. Scores also help us size up who should play where, who's on first, what's on on second... you get the deal. Be competitive and teach accordingly. Especially important during pool play. Then on day 2 or 3 turn it on (if you can or not) and play with the new tools taught on day 1 and see how they do. Some, most, or part of this pertains to 10's and maybe 12's. One persons view...glad to hear other input.

I'm more confused now then before. So its OK to post scores in July because teams are broken in, but in April they are too frail and not in mid season form so lets pretend that nothing happened. Again, the whole notion is just so Rec ball and T-Ball to me. Isn't this TRAVEL BALL???? Whats wrong with posting the scores. These games were played and there were winners and losers. This fact was determined by the final score of the game, not secret umpire ballot.

U F - If a "travel" team has to depend on the play of 1 player or even two to that fact & they get run ruled - why hide the fact that they are something that they're not? Even the best of teams can have an off game but it shows that they are vulnerable. Fact is fact - Losing hurts but only until the first pitch of the next game ! Whos feelings are you really trying to protect? The players don't really give a Rats a** - It's the egos of the parents that really get hurt now dosn't it ?
