Yes. You can use a catchers mitt there if you wish.......

I stand corrected on USSSA mitt is fine anywhere..... In NSA only the catcher and first baseman can wear mitts, rule 3, section 3..

Yeah....each association has limits as to length, width, etc. so as long as the glove or mitt fits within the parameters you are good to go. I do believe the catchers mitt can be any size if the mitt is actually being used by the catcher.

The NSA does indeed state that only catchers and 1st baseman may wear mitts (Rule 3, Section 3). I did not know that...

I had a question asked of me this weekend that I could not answer. Although I cant answer may correctly... The question was "Why is a 1st baseman?s glove different then the rest of the gloves on the ball field I can understand the reason for a different catchers mitt but what?s the deal with the 1st base glove? Can someone please let me in on the secret?

There have been some changes among the sanctions recently with respect to whether a mitt can be used at positions other than 1st and catcher. Ohio HS allows mitts anywhere, which we just learned. And ASA has changed to allow that as well.

Mitts are designed to trap thrown balls whereas gloves are designed to trap batted balls. Mitts are desined more for scooping badly thrown balls. Gloves are more forgiving. Smaller gloves are used for the infield because it is easier to transfer the ball from a small glove compared to a big glove. Larger gloves are worn in the outfield for added reach.

Thanks "Lenski". Great answers. I'll be sure to pass along the information to the person that asked.

Well, if you call six or seven years ago "recent".... ;)

That's when ASA changed their rule and I believe that high school had this rule long before that.

If you were to round up all the different baseball and softball organizations, it would be about a 50/50 split between those that limit mitts to F2 and F3 only and those that allow a mitt to be used at any position.

@Bretman:

When you are as old as I am, six or seven years does seem recent. :p

Daughter is primarily a first baseman who has been given the opportunity to move up and play 3rd and first for the JV.

What rule # should I reference tonight that she is permitted to wear a mitt? I could not get it on my blackberry at the game last night and did not have a rule book with me to reference...

Rule 1-4 describes a legal glove or mitt. The rule doesn't flat out say "either a glove or mitt is legal at any position". But wherever it does mention what type of gloves players can wear, it refers to "gloves/mitts"- that is, "gloves and/or mitts", meaning either is acceptable and legal.

I suppose that if your umpire isn't convinced this is the case, he may not be convinced even after reading the rule as it is written. But I can assure you that this is the correct interpretation. It has been made clear in various NFHS publications.

Do you have a date I can reference to "help" my friends the umpires for this publication?

Ps, this conference team had two players with the number 23. Is that illegal?

I just felt she could've went out there bare handed and done great. It was a poor attempt at distracting our players. Especially after we allowed two number 23's. Just smile and WIN.

The only printed interpretation of this I can recall was in one of the "Preseason Softball Guides" published by NFHS a few years ago. I keep those in a file at home and might have it, but I'm not home right now. This is something that high school umpires should know and be aware of.

I would check with the umpires BEFORE the game, just to make sure they're going to say it's okay and before it could possibly become an issue. It should be fine...but you might want to have a back-up glove in the bag "just in case".

On the "same two numbers" thing...The uniform rules do specifically say that two players on a team may not wear the same number. But there really isn't much of a penalty involved if they do.

The first option is to correct the issue- just give one of the kids a different jersey. There is no further penalty involved.

If the issue cannot be corrected, umpires are directed to let both kids play anyway, without penalty. We are then to report the problem to OHSAA and they may follow-up with the school.

The official stance is that we want to promote participation for student athletes and they don't want to deny that opportunity based on something like a technical violation of the uniform rules- something that the player may have absolutely no control over.

That is actually the same thought process behind allowing a glove or mitt at any position- participation. They do not want to deny a player the chance to participate for lack of an expensive, specialized piece of equipment (like a catcher's mitt of first base mitt).

Thank you for the hand up-it's good joe-go back to your camera look! I will get another glove so as not to be a distraction to future teams third base coach! Haha!

Great win last night!

PS, played this team again last night, at our place, rule book in hand. Sent young T onto the field with her "mitt" to play 3rd. No issue, quite interesting nothing was said...then again they kept looking at the scoreboard after the 1st inning when we hung 9 runs on them... ;)

Nice win via run-rule coach, 5 innings didn't take long!
