I think team doc hit it on the head. I was talking about this over the weekend and a coach said before they started this trend he had the pitchers pointing their glove hand back toward the throwing arms elbow to prevent the 3rd base coach from seeing the grip. He said some coaches would watch the grip VERY closely and call out different colors to tip the batters of what pitch was comming.

DD asked her pitching coach (who works with lots of DI-Big Ten, East & MAC pitchers) about this...and he said it was done to try to hide the grip longer...came mainly out of SEC and PAC 10

So why not take on a Hillhouse style and never show your grip until your exploding into the windmill?

"Alabama's coaches must've learned that their pitchers were giving away or "tipping" their pitches to the other team as they were getting their grip. So, they began getting their grip of the ball by turning their sides so the 3rd base coach could not look into the glove. Unfortunately, the pitchers were completely negating that when they would drop out of the glove prematurely before going forward. An observant hitter will just watch the pitcher's hip and see the ball as it drops out of the glove with the grip attached. Once they see that, they will know what pitch is coming and should start making adjustments accordingly before the pitch is even thrown. So the movement that the Alabama pitchers were making, while it makes sense on the surface, is completely lost during the rest of their motion." HOP

This is the quote from Hillhouse Newsletter regarding the pitchers motion.

fpitchdad, i am just guessing here, but i believe you do not think good to great hitters even look for a pitchers grip or any other tale tell sign of what pitch they are going to throw before the pitcher really throws it.
