We just found out (;&) at the first NSA tourney of the sesaon that the pitching distance for 14U will be 43 feet for all Western Pennsylvania NSA sanctioned tournaments. ASA will still be 40 ft.

What is Ohio (NSA and ASA) doing in regard to pitching distance?

If I read it right its up to each state until next year when the rule becomes effective. I really don't know what Ohio is doing.

Ohio NSA is doing 43' for 16-u and 40' for the 14-u this year. Can not speak for the ASA.

ASA changed for this year...all 16U and 18U girl's fastpitch is now at 43 feet.

This rule is mandatory for any tournament with national championship ramifications (reginal/state qualifiers, etc.). An individual tournament that is not part of championship play may modify this rule, if they wish.

Are you sure it's 43' for 14u? Seems like most sanctions are moving to 43' for 16u, but IMO, 43' for 14u might be pushing it a little. High school I can understand, because they are all potentially grouped together.

An 80th percentile 14u pitcher should have no problems at 43', but that's a small percentage of kids. For the "typical" 14u, changeups and drops fall of the table a little earlier, and movement pitches break a little earlier. So slight adjustments need to be made. Should have no problems spotting a flat fastball, it's the movement and off-speed pitches that will change.

NSA made it an option for 2010 for both age groups, but is hosting the 16-u Worlds at 43'.

Due to this, it made perfect sense to get the 16-u's on that distance during all qualifying tournaments. I would wager that with the majority of the high school federations going 43' this year or in the future, that 43' becomes the norm in 16-u.

I think there will be serious discussion regarding 14-u at 43' feet before it becomes set in stone. Like Sammy said, the majority of girls that are good enough to pitch at the varsity level are not playing on 14-u teams. If the NSA had a 15-u division, that could be a different story due to age cut offs. One other sanction does offer that and they already made the jump to 43' for 15-u last fall.

Question is: Did PA High School ball go to 43' feet this Spring. If so, then that might be why PA went to 43' for 14u summer ball. Just a thought

PA high school ball is still 40ft for this year - going to 43 next year. I believe middle school ball is moving to 43ft also, but not 100% positive. There are quite a few freshman varsity pitchers in western PA who are playing 14U ball. For 14U, I think the move is a good idea. I just wish the anouncement would've been made "clearly and definatively" this fall or winter.
