Been searching for a 2nd year 16u college exposure type team for a good friend of mine and can't believe the large changes in the scenery . No more Doom 95. No more Championship Fastpitch, not many openings (if any ) with the other top clubs. where are all these kids landing ? going to 18u clubs ? getting mixed in with 96 DOB teams ? Maybe we will find out after tryouts .... This player was looking for team in Southern/Central ohio . MD

To MC Hammers : a top ten type org recommended you 2 days via PM .... people are noticing ! lol I passed it on the dad of this player yesterday. Played OF for years , moved to 2nd for both travel and HS ball last year. Fast, very fast. Not blowing smoke but atheletically she is a top 10 % type kid. Strong Arm, quick hands. Needs a strong coach to keep her mentally focused. MD

not letting any big secret out of the bag as tryouts for the Doom org are posted and there is no listing for Doom 95 . Understand this a general answer with no inside information . They had several girls decide to play out of state . MD

and after you just posted how great of a year ohio softball had. why play somewhere else? this is the reason ohio teams don't get that elite status.

They play somewhere else because those out of state organizations have a much better entree to exposure tournaments and college coaches. That increases the odds of a good scholly (which is not to say that Ohio travel ball doesn't produce scholarship players; it's just a matter of increasing the possibility). There are some travel ball coaches in Ohio who can open the same doors as the out of state organizations in question (and you don't usually see their players leaving Ohio), but they are frankly few and far between. Assuming that a family has the time and the money to play for an out of state really, really elite organization, I can't fault the family for taking advantage of the opportunity.

And yes, the loss of these players to out of state organizations dilutes the talent for Ohio travel ball teams. But I don't think you can ask a family who has the resources to go out of state with a great exposure/college placement organization to stick around just for the betterment of Ohio fastpitch.

The good news is that Ohio is developing players who at the ages of 14u and 16u have the talent to get these opportunities.

very personal decision for each family that decides thats whats best for their own kid. One thing for sure Ohio needs to SERIOUSLY look in the mirror at the 16-18u age group and evaluate why players and families don't feel they can get the same college looks and play the same competition as a Bandit or Intensity or Gold Coast. I'm not so sure it's the competition as it obviously didn't harm the Scarlett this year or the Sundogs in 2009 or the White in 2010, or even the Gold at 14u . Ohio teams routinely compete well on the natl stage ( proving we have the talent) even though it took a while to win one.
Ohio just has to get the coach's/leaders of more org's established with the college coach's. Thats what it boils down too. MD

And how to you propose that we coaches do that? Our household networks as hard as we can, with multiple emails going out to college coaches about the specific talents of specific players and with attendance at things like the NFCA Coaches College, but we have day jobs. I believe that it takes either years of knocking on the door or plenty of money for the program and for player family personal travel expenses to get on the map in the way that the corporate-sponsored out of state organizations do. JP, Jeff, and Glen have been through the cycle from younger to older more than probably any other coaches in Ohio, and the facts that they have made good recommendations in the past plus that their teams have traveled to nationally recognized events have given them credibility with college coaches. But I think they would tell you that it is a long, hard-earned process. In the meantime, we continue to press our players to make direct contact with college coaches and we devote whatever discretionary time and funds we have to playing a competitive schedule and to communications with college coaches.

Do you have any specific suggestions about what else we could do, short of finding a big-time corporate sponsor or requiring that every young lady on our team have the financial resources to travel to high profile national tournaments every week?

dang , didn't mean to imply my thoughts were to any particular coach or org. I sincerely apologize . I don't know the actions/hard work/time spent/money spent/blood/sweat/tears of every coach/org in ohio. I DO KNOW a percentage of Ohio's best are leaving every year. (and an increasing % of the best of the best) Several have publically state it's over college exposure and competition. Don't shoot the messenger ok ? I'm in agreement with you CGS , all you can can do is work hard at it.

Dan you are correct in what you say. How do these organizations do it, I am sure the Bandits coach has a job as well.

While in Utah, the wife saw, during the Hawks game vs Powersurge that the head coach for the Powersurge left the game and dugout to network with all the college coaches watching our game. Marketing his players to each and every coach there watching this game. Profiles in hand, pointed out players during certain situations. This went on for the whole game. It was a 4 to 1 game so it was not a blow out. I dont have answer but their is a reason why these players are leaving.

Get people like JP, Jeff and Glen to stay at the older age groups instead of cycling back down to the younger age groups. Ohio needs to develop anchors at the top of their organizations like Bill Conroy, Gary Haning, Doug Myers, Bruce Richardson, Tony Rico and Marty Tyson to keep the top players in-state.

thanks Socal dad , that type of approach was in my head but didn't make it to print . I'm sure college coaches like seeing the same person with the same org year after year, where there is a certain rapport that can be trusted. MD

So what what someones advice be for a team that may have a player that made a verbal commitment to a college? And colleges looking at some other players?? I was told by a college coach being that a player on team made a verbal commitment to a college that the team will gets some looks from other colleges just for that reason. Still want to try to get team in "big name" tourneys if possible. Definitely the players are writing to colleges (weekly) and being noticed. i guess I am always afraid I am going to miss something (opportunity) for a player so I am always asking questions and researching.
